:What do I do if the "534 Policy requires SSL" error message appears when I access an FTP site deployed on a Windows instance?

Last Updated:Mar 14, 2023

This topic describes the following issue, the cause of the issue, and how to resolve the issue: The "534 Policy requires SSL" error message appears when FTP over TLS is used to access an FTP site that was created by Internet Information Services (IIS) on a Windows Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance.

Problem description

The "534 Policy requires SSL" error message appears when you use FTP over TLS to access an FTP site that is created by IIS on a Windows instance. You cannot access the FTP site.

Cause

The response "534 Local policy on server does not allow TLS secure connections" indicates that the issue is caused by incorrect parameter settings in FTP SSL Settings.

Solution

  1. Connect to the Windows instance.

For more information, see Connection methods.

  2. In the lower-left corner of the desktop, choose Start icon > Windows Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

  3. In the FTP section on the FTP homepage, click FTP SSL Settings.

  4. On the FTP SSL Settings page, set SSL Policy to Allow SSL connections. Then, click Apply in the Actions column.

  5. Access the FTP site again.
