Change the instance configurations of a node

Last Updated: Sep 18, 2021

If the current instance configurations of a node cannot meet your business needs, you can change them when you use a cluster in the Elastic High Performance Computing (E-HPC) console. The instance configurations of a node include the instance type (vCPUs and memory), bandwidth configurations, and the billing method of the data disks. This topic describes how to change the instance type of a node.

Background information

To change the instance configurations of a node, you can change its instance type, bandwidth configurations, and the billing method of the data disks. For more information, see Overview of instance upgrade and downgrade.

Make sure that the cluster is deployed in one of the following modes:

  • Standard: An account node, two management nodes, and multiple compute nodes are deployed.

  • Simple: A logon node, a management node, and multiple compute nodes are deployed. The management node consists of an account node and a scheduling node.

  • Tiny: A management node and multiple compute nodes are deployed. The management node consists of an account node, a scheduling node, and a logon node.

If you change the instance configurations of a node, it is stopped and restarted. We recommend that you ensure no job is running in advance. Different nodes have different impacts when their instance configurations are changed:

  • Logon node: Cluster logon is not supported.

  • Management node:

    • Domain account node: It cannot be accessed. Jobs cannot be scheduled as expected.

    • Scheduling node: Jobs cannot be created and viewed. Running jobs are not affected.

  • Compute node: A running job or task may be suspended.

Change the instance type of a subscription node

The following prerequisites apply when you change the instance type of a subscription node:

  • Upgrade: Check whether the instance type of the node can be upgraded in advance. For more information, see Instance families that support instance type changes.

  • Downgrade:

    • Your account does not have overdue payments and has the configuration downgrade privilege.

      Note

To check whether your account has the configuration downgrade privilege, navigate to the Overview page of the Elastic Compute Service (ECS) console. On the Overview page, click Privileges. On the Privileges and Quotas page, click the Privileges tab.

    • The node is in the Stopped state.

    • The instance type of the node can be downgraded. For more information, see Instance families that support instance type changes.

    • The node does not have a renewal and configuration downgrade task in process. If the instance has a renewal and configuration downgrade task in process, you must wait until the task is completed.

To change the instance type of a subscription node, perform the following steps:

  1. Log on to the E-HPC console.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  3. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resource Management > Nodes.

  4. Select a cluster from the Cluster drop-down list. Select a node type from the Node Type drop-down list.

  5. In the Node List section, select the node and choose More Actions > Details in the Actions column.

The instance details page of the node appears.

  6. In the Basic Information section, move the pointer over the icon icon and click Upgrade/Downgrade in the Actions column.

    • Upgrade:

      1. In the Upgrade/Downgrade Wizard dialog box, select Upgrade, and click Continue.

      2. On the Upgrade page, complete the instance type settings.

    • Downgrade:

      1. In the Upgrade/Downgrade Wizard dialog box, select Downgrade and Instance Type and then click Continue.

      2. On the Downgrade page, complete the instance type settings.

  7. Read the notice. If you do not have questions, select ECS Service Terms.

  8. Confirm the price, click Create Order, and then complete the payment.

  9. In the Node List section of the E-HPC console, select the node, and click Reboot in the Actions column.

Change the instance type of a pay-as-you-go node

The following prerequisites apply when you change the instance type of a pay-as-you-go node:

  • The node is a pay-as-you-go instance, excluding preemptible instances.

  • The node is in the Stopped state.

  • The instance family to which the instance belongs supports instance type changes. For more information, see Instance families that support instance type changes.

To change the instance type of a pay-as-you-go node, perform the following steps:

  6. Change the instance type of the node.

    1. In the Basic Information section, click Stop.

    2. Move the pointer over the icon icon and click Change Instance Type in the Actions column.

    3. On the Change Instance Type page, select a new instance type.

    4. Confirm the price and click Change.

  7. In the Node List section of the E-HPC console, select the node, and click Reboot in the Actions column.
