CityUHK and Alibaba Cloud Sign MoU to Advance AI Education and Innovation

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Alibaba Cloud signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly promote the development of artificial i.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 8 October to jointly promote the development of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud technologies and innovative education. This collaboration aims to nurture digital talent with a global perspective and foster deeper integration between academia and industry.

The MoU was signed by Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President and University Distinguished Professor, and Mr Thomas Ho, Vice President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Hong Kong & Macau region. Distinguished guests attending the signing ceremony included representatives from both CityUHK and Alibaba Cloud.

Through this partnership, the two parties will explore various collaborative initiatives, including the establishment of the “CityUHK x Alibaba Cloud AI Digital Learning Lab”, which will focus on cutting-edge generative AI technologies and promote the integration of technology and education.

Additionally, Alibaba Cloud will leverage its educational platform, Alibaba Cloud Academy, to work with CityUHK in advancing AI and innovation. The platform will provide relevant course materials and content to support CityUHK in developing curricula that align with industry needs and the latest technological advancements.

Under the MoU, Alibaba Cloud also plans to offer internship opportunities to CityUHK students and provide them with hands-on experience through cross-regional visits and competitions in top-tier tech environments.

At the signing ceremony, President Boey expressed CityUHK’s enthusiasm for collaborating with Alibaba Cloud, which would enrich students’ learning resources and provide practical experience in international tech enterprises and environments.

President Boey added that CityUHK was committed to driving innovation in the rapidly evolving AI era and equipping students to meet future challenges through strategic partnerships. “To further promote campus innovation, CityUHK recently appointed Professor Ma Wei-ying, Director of the Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science, as the Chief of AI at CityUHK to lead the strategic development of AI,” he said. “At the same time, a newly established committee chaired by Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President, is dedicated to developing a hiring approach to attract top AI talent.”

Mr Ho praised CityUHK for its excellence in innovative research and talent cultivation and expressed Alibaba Cloud’s delight in partnering with CityUHK to promote the accessibility and advancement of AI education through the technologies and resources of Alibaba Cloud Academy.

CityUHK is committed to advancing digital learning and fully leveraging the benefits AI brings to society. The recently established “Institute for Future Learning” exemplifies CityUHK’s dedication to educational innovation, by promoting interdisciplinary teaching and the development of digital learning technologies.
