Building a Home Hybrid Cloud on a Budget: Day One - Drawing the Blueprint and Estimating the Scope, Time, and Cost

Part 1 of this 5-part series begins connecting on-premises machines to Alibaba Cloud (via a private tunnel) on budget.

By Vincent Siu, Alibaba Cloud Certified Expert - Cloud Computing

Introduction

My last article discussed different Network Interconnection methods for Alibaba Cloud. Researching a solution to build a Home Hybrid Cloud on a budget stimulates me. My research has lasted for months. As a result, I thought about writing a series. This is an experimental journey in discovering how to connect on-premises machines to Alibaba Cloud (via a private tunnel) on a budget. My objective is to finish it within a short time frame while making it affordable to an ordinary person.

Series Outline

  • Day One – Drawing the Blueprint and Estimating the Scope, Time, and Cost
  • Day Two – Preparing the Recipes, Hardware, Software, and Alibaba Cloud Coupon
  • Day Three – Peplink FusionHub in Action
  • Day Four – QNAP QuTScloud in Action
  • Day Five – The Maiden Voyage and Performance Tests

I want to show my idea as a simple network diagram. My objective is to send a ping command from a host to an ECS instance, both located in each private subnet across an IPSec VPN tunnel. As a result, I could separate the traffic by public and private connection easily. This is a typical requirement of a corporate network in the business world.

I aim to finish this project within $500 USD for hardware and less than $100 USD/month for expenses on the cloud. I estimate one day for implementation and one day for testing.

Conclusion

I believe cloud computing is the future, but for now, we still have most stuff locally on-premises. I would love to see how the power of cloud technology can change the landscape of a SOHO network. This solution may impact network interconnection from a local network to various cloud platforms.
