Building on the momentum of their expanded 2025 strategic partnership in China, the BMW Group China and Alibaba Group have reached a definitive milestone in their collaboration. At the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, BMW showcased BMW Panoramic iDrive on BMW Neue Klasse models for the first time in China, and introduced the new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, built on the foundation of the Alibaba Qwen model and integrated with Banma’s Yan AI.

To address the limitations of traditional in-car voice assistants in semantic understanding and task execution, BMW has introduced three AI agents powered by the Alibaba’s Qwen model for the Chinese market: Travel Companion, Car Genius, and General Knowledge. The new BMW iX3 Long Wheel Base will be the first model to feature the technology and followed by the new BMW 7 series, offering customers an unprecedented level of intuitive, human-centric interaction.

Redefining the In-Car Experience

Harnessing the advanced capability of Qwen, the agents addresses every facet of the driving journey.

  • Travel Companion is a sophisticated planner to execute complex, multi-constraint requests—such as locating high-rated shopping malls with specific amenities and parking—with seamless precision.
  • Car Genius serves as a 24/7 expert, utilizing a proprietary database of over 200,000 BMW service entries. It provides precise diagnostics such as interpreting complex warning lights through fluid, natural-language dialogue.
  • General Knowledge is an on-demand information hub. It delivers authoritative, context-aware answers—from real-time weather forecasts and financial market updates, to scientific explanations and cultural insights—allowing users to access encyclopedic information hands-free and distraction-free.

The deployment is underpinned by Alibaba’s full-stack AI+Cloud capability. At the infrastructure layer, Alibaba Cloud provides the secure, high-performance cloud infrastructure capable of handling millisecond-level responses in complex scenarios. At the model layer, BMW Group China utilizes Qwen’s elite capabilities in knowledge reasoning and complex task decomposition via Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio, its flagship Model-as-a-Service platform. And at the Application Layer, the Banma Yan AI seamlessly integrates these capabilities into the vehicle’s hardware, enabling the AI agents to interact dynamically with the physical world.

This innovation marks the latest chapter in a decade of synergy dating back to 2015, spanning cloud computing, smart manufacturing, and logistics. The 2025 strategic expansion into large language models has positioned both companies at the vanguard of the industrial AI revolution. By fusing BMW’s automotive heritage with Alibaba’s AI prowess, this partnership redefines the relationship between driver and machine.

Looking ahead, both parties remain committed to deepening their collaboration across AI, cloud computing, and innovation ecosystems to explore the possibilities of intelligent mobility and drive the intelligent transformation of the industry.
