move managed ESXi/SMB hosts from one vCenter Server to another vCenter Server (2097408)

Purpose

this topic describes how to move an ESXi/SMB host from one vCenter Server to another vCenter Server.

Precautions before migration:

  • we recommend that you do not migrate Distributed Switch-equipped hosts. To migrate hosts to standard switches before migrating to a new vCenter Server, see the following articles:

    • Moving an ESX/ESXi host with vDS from one vCenter Server to another (1029498)

    • Exporting/importing/restoring Distributed Switch configs using vSphere Web client (2034602).

  • If you want to migrate to vSphere 6.0 environment, note that the VMFS-3 has been deprecated. for more information, see Frequently Asked Questions on Deprecation and End of Support (EOS) for VMFS-3 in VMware vSphere 6.0.x (2093576).

  • Before migrating a host, you must recreate the vCenter Server settings on the new High Availability.

  • You must set the DRS parameter to manual or disabled before moving the SMB/ESXi host. You must create DRS settings on the target vCenter Server. In this way, the resource pool is removed from the ESXi/SMB host at the same time. For more information, see Disabling VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) (1007655). Important Information : do not disable DRS if you want to use VMware vCloud Director or VMware Horizon View. Configure DRS to manually retain existing resource pools.

  • The storage DRS must be set to manual or copied from the target vCenter Server. For more information about Enabling and disabling Storage DRS, see Enabling and disabling Storage DRS (SDRS) in the vSphere Web Client (2032910).

Resolution

to ESXi/ESX host from a vCenter Server To another vCenter Server, Please from vCenter Server remove Host, and then this host added to the new vCenter Server. This operation does not affect the status of any virtual machines running on ESXi/SMB hosts as long as the required conditions are met. However, the historical performance data of ESXi/SMB and its virtual machines will be cleared.

  3. Right-click the managed host icon in the list panel and select remove .

  4. Click is to confirm that you want to remove the managed host and all its associated virtual machines.

Add an ESXi/SMB host to a new vCenter Server

to add an ESXi/SMB host to a new vCenter Server, do the following:
