Open Source is the Standard in IT

Almost every business in the world has gone to 100 percent remote working overnight due to the pandemic. Organizations of all sizes and industries have learned to function remotely and on-demand. We witnessed new tech centers arise in unexpected areas because employees were no longer restricted to certain cities. Organizations focused on acquiring fresh talent based on expertise rather than location, as newly remote workers understood they didn't have to be tethered to a physical workplace.

These are not minor accomplishments, and while this manner of working was unusual to those obliged to adjust during the pandemic, it was simply another day for the future of open source technology.

Every open source program has been worked on remotely from its start. In 2021, there were over 28,000 active participants in such projects, contributing over 29 million programming language code lines per week and hailing from practically every country on the planet. The majority of these participants will never meet in person, yet they are capable of driving the next phase of open technology.

Our achievements during these past years, whether or not we understood them, got us close to the open source paradigm, which is precisely the reason the benefits of open source technology are now driving most of the software industry. We noticed new revenue sources, discovered new methods to be more effective and uncovered new ways to interact with our clients as a result of this unique way of working.

It's time to accelerate as we near the end of what was an extremely challenging few years. It's time to understand what open source technology is and to apply the lessons we learned and implemented as we transitioned to a digital-first world to better our businesses, cultures and global communities.

You get to create your own new normal. How would you like your company to appear? How do you intend to accept the next iteration of information technology? How will you steer your technology initiatives toward greater innovation?

The applications of open source are the only methods to get close to this breakthrough and use it to stay up with changing needs. That is what will bring you towards the new reality. Open source created code, not open core or commercial software, is the cornerstone of the invention that is shaping the future of IT. Open source produced technology is the only method to generate and respond to these developments.

Open source is at the heart of the new ordinary for IT. This code provides a route for your imagination and goals that are not limited. It has always been the Red Hat model: open source methods, code and technologies are central to all we do.

According to 90% of organizations surveyed 8 years ago, which seems like an eternity in IT terms, they were using the same cloud provider. Many CIOs may have embraced the cloud before they even had a firm plan in place, whether to get ahead of the competition or due to other demands. Almost a decade later, many of these same CIOs are discovering that their decisions were not the greatest for their budgets, workflows or overall strategy.

The fact is that these enterprises will not be able to select whether or not to implement hybrid cloud. While the cloud adds substantial value to some programs, not every application requires or should be hosted on a public cloud. Some apps may be best adapted to a specific cloud, while others may be necessary to operate on-premises while accessing cloud services. That is the magic of hybrid cloud and the advantages of open source technology.

Applications, workloads, and infrastructures should run and exist wherever they are essential. This might be a datacenter, a public cloud, many public clouds or at the periphery where computational resources must be as near to your data as feasible. The fifth cloud is a connection, not a datacenter. It connects different cloud environments, devices and workloads based on open industry standards.
