FAQs about ESSD disks

What is an ESSD disk?

An ESSD disk is an ultra-high performance cloud disk product that has been newly launched by Alibaba Cloud. It is based on the new generation of distributed block storage architecture, 25GE network, and RDMA technology. The maximum IOPS of a single disk is 1 million. It also provides lower latency.

How is the data reliability of ESSD disks?

Same as SSD disks and Ultra Disks, ESSD disks guarantee 99.9999999% data reliability.

What scenarios does an ESSD disk apply to?

ESSD disks provide high performance and low latency. It is suitable for the scenarios that involve latency-sensitive and I/O-intensive workloads.

  • Deploy OLTP databases. Such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, and other relational databases.

  • Deploy NoSQL databases. Such as MongoDB, HBase, Cassandra, and other non-relational databases.

  • Build a distributed log system. Such as log analysis using the Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana).

What is the difference among ESSD disks, SSD disks, and Ultra Disks?

Common features: ESSD disks, SSD disks, and Ultra Disks are cloud disk products based on distributed block storage architecture. They provide high reliability and scalability. They support snapshots and data encryption.

Different features: The performance of ESSD disks has been greatly improved compared to SSD disks and Ultra Disks. The comparisons are shown in the following table.

How are the performance metrics of ESSD disks calculated?

The performance of ESSD disks is linearly related to its capacity. The larger the capacity, the higher the performance. Compared with SSD disks, ESSD disks have a significant improvement in performance.

  • IOPS: min{1800 + 50 * capacity, 1,000,000}. The base is 1800 IOPS, increased by 50 IOPS per GiB, up to a maximum of 1,000,000 IOPS.
  • Throughput: min{120 + 0.5 * capacity, 4000} MBps. The base is 120 MBps, increased by 0.5 MBps per GiB, up to a maximum of 4,000 MBps.

What is the relationship between ESSD disk performance and instance performance?

The storage performance of some instances is linearly related to the instance types. For example, the storage performance of an instance from g5se, storage-optimized ECS instance type family, is linearly related to its type. The higher the type level, the higher the IOPS and the throughput.

After you create a g5se instance and mount ESSD disks to it:

  • If the storage performance of the ESSD disks does not exceed that of the instance, the actual storage performance is based on the ESSD.

  • If the storage performance of the ESSD disks exceeds that of the instance, the actual storage performance is based on the instance.

    For example, you created an ecs.g5se.xlarge instance that has a maximum IOPS of 60 thousand. If you mount an ESSD disk that has a capacity of 2 TB (the IOPS is 101,800 ) to the instance, the maximum IOPS of the instance is 60 thousand instead of 101,800.

How is ESSD disks billed?

ESSD disks and SSD disks are of the same price.

  • If you select Subscription as the billing method, the service is billed based on months with the unit price of RMB 1/GiB/month. If you select Pay-As-You-Go as the billing method, the service is billed based on seconds with the unit price of RMB 0.0014/GiB/hour.

  • Prices of ESSD disks in other countries and regions are pending.

  • You can select Subscription or Pay-As-You-Go as the billing method.

What are the available regions and zones for ESSD disk services?

  • Currently, ESSD disk services are available in China North 2 Zone G and China East 2 Zone F.

  • More regions and zones will be available.

What instance types can ESSD disks be mounted to?

Currently, ESSD disks is in beta. Only instance type families that are based on 25GE network (c5, g5, r5, g5se) support ESSD disk mounting.
