Two logon authentication methods of WinSCP

WinSCP has two logon authentication methods, which are:

These two methods are described respectively as follows:

Log on by using key pair

Key pair is a relatively secure logon authentication method, which is also the recommended method to log on to the server.

Create and download a key

For details on creating and downloading a key, refer to Key Management

Configure a key pair in WinSCP

Open WinSCP, and click Advanced

Click Verify

Choose next to Key File

Select the downloaded pem key, and click Confirm You will be prompted whether you want to convert the format, click OK

Then a dialog box will prompt you to save the file. You can select any directory to save the converted file. The generated key file with the suffix “ppk” is the key pair that you can use to log on to the server. After saving it successfully, you will see that the suffix of the key has been changed to ppk. Click OK.

Log on to the server

In the New Site window, select SCP as the File Protocol, then enter the IP address as the Host Name, and root as the Account, and then click Log on

After logging on, you will be able to see the directory on the server.

Log on by using account and password

Modify the root password

For details on modifying the root password, refer to Modify the Root Password

Configure the account and password in WinSCP

In the New Site window, select SCP as the File Protocol, then enter the IP address as the Host Name, root as the Account, and the new root password modified in the preceding step as the Password, and then click Log on

After logging on, you will be able to see the directory on the server.
