d1 and d1ne instance type families FAQ

Last Updated: May 28, 2018

What are d1 and d1ne instance type families?

d1 and d1ne instance type families are instances with local disks, designed for business scenarios such as Hadoop distributed computing, mass log processing, and large data warehouses. It targets on-cloud computing and storage of mass business data in the big data era.

What industries and business scenarios are d1 and d1ne instances applicable to?

d1 and d1ne instances are applicable to the Internet industry, the financial industry, and other industries that require big data computing and storage analysis for massive data storage and offline computing business scenarios. It meets the requirements of distributed computing business models represented by Hadoop in multiple aspects. It includes instance storage performance, capacity, and intranet bandwidth.

Working together with the highly available architecture design of distributed computing businesses represented by Hadoop, the local disks enable d1 and d1ne instances to provide massive disk space and high storage performance. It has a similar total cost of ownership to self-built Hadoop clusters in offline IDCs.

What are the features of d1 and d1ne instances?

d1 and d1ne instances have the following features:

  • Stable computing capability based on exclusive architecture, to guarantee efficient computing.
  • Higher network performance (for more information, see Instance generations and type families) to satisfy the requirements for data interaction among instances during business peaks, such as the Shuffle phase in the MapReduce.
  • Up to 190 MB/s sequential read and write capacity for a single local disk and up to 5 GB/s throughput for a single ECS instance. Both accelerate writing and reading files in HDFS. For a new instance, the maximum sequential read and write capacity cannot be achieved until the disk is warmed up.
  • The cost of local disks is only 3% of that of cloud disks. This greatly reduces the cost of Hadoop cluster construction.

What are d1 or d1ne instance types?

For more information about d1 and d1ne instance types, see Instance generations and type families in Product Introduction of ECS.

Can I create a local disk for a d1 or d1ne instance?

No. You can only create local disks when you create a d1 or d1ne instance, and the number of local disks is determined by the instance type. For more information, see Instance generations and type families in Product Introduction of ECS.

Is it risky to use local disks for storing data?

Warning:
If you store data on a local disk, you may lose data in some cases. For example, you may lose data when the physical server that hosts your d1 or d1ne instance crashes. We recommend that you use cloud disks to deploy your applications if the architecture-based reliability cannot be guaranteed.

The following table displays how operating a d1 or d1ne instance affects the data on the local disk.

Actions Data on the local disks Description
Restart or force restart an instance in the OS or in the ECS console. Retained The volumes of the local disks are retained, and data on the disks is retained.
Stop or force stop an instance in the OS or in the ECS console. Retained The volumes of the local disks are retained, and data on the disks is retained.
Release an instance in the ECS console. Erased The volumes of the local disks are retained, and data on the disks is deleted.

Can I attach SSD cloud disks to a d1 or d1ne instance? Can these cloud disks be resized?

Yes, you can attach one or multiple cloud disks to a d1 or d1ne instance. The attached cloud disks can be resized. For more information, see Resize cloud disks.

Can I create a snapshot of the local disks of a d1 or d1ne instance?

Currently, snapshots of the local disks are not supported. Therefore, if you want to create a full image for a d1 or d1ne instance, we recommend that you create it by combining the snapshots of the cloud disks that are used as the system disk and the data disks.

You cannot create a full image based on the instance ID, so you cannot create a d1 or d1ne instance by using a custom image.

Are configuration change and automatic recovery supported by a d1 or d1ne instance?

You cannot change configurations of d1ne or d1 instances, and automatic recovery is not supported. Please pay attention to notices on Alibaba Cloud official website as to when the features will be available.

Time of release and available regions
