Domain Names:Renew domain names

Last Updated:Nov 24, 2023

You can renew a registered domain name to extend its validity period. Renew your domain name before it expires to ensure its normal operations.

Background information

Before a domain name expires, Alibaba Cloud sends notifications by email and text message to remind you to renew your domain name at the earliest opportunity. After a domain name expires, a 30-day grace period is provided for renewal. You can renew your domain name within the grace period. When the grace period ends, the domain name enters the redemption period. You need to pay a higher price to redeem your domain name within the redemption period. For more information, see Redeem a domain name.

Important You are not allowed to use a RAM user to register or renew a domain name in the Alibaba Cloud Domains console or by calling Domains API operations. If you want to register or renew a domain name, use your Alibaba Cloud account.

Time for resuming the resolution of a domain name

If you do not renew your domain name before it expires, the resolution of your domain name may be suspended by the domain name registrar at any time based on related regulations published by the domain name administration. If the resolution of your domain name is suspended, your website becomes inaccessible.

If you renew your domain name within 30 days (28 days for .hk domain names) after it expires, the resolution of your domain name will be resumed within a specific period of time.

  • Domain names that are hosted by Alibaba Cloud DNS: The resolution will be resumed within 24 hours after the domain name is renewed.

  • Domain names that are hosted by third-party DNS service providers: The resolution will be resumed within 24 to 48 hours after the domain name is renewed.

We recommend that you renew your domain name before it expires to ensure the continuity of your business.

Procedure

Note

For more information about the renewal prices of regular domain names, see Pricing overview of domain names. The renewal price of a premium domain name is subject to the price returned by the domain name registrar in real time. The domain name registrar occasionally releases promotion policies. The preferential prices of domain names appear only on the order settlement page. Therefore, the renewal prices on the renewal order page prevail.

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud Domains console by using the Alibaba Cloud account to which one or more domain names belong and its password.

  2. Go to the renewal page based on the number of domain names that you want to renew:

    • Renew a single domain name

In the left-side navigation pane, click Domain Names. On the Domain Names page, select Pending Renewal from the All States drop-down list. Find the domain name that you want to renew and click Renew in the Actions column.

    • Renew multiple domain names at a time

In the left-side navigation pane, click Domain Names. On the Domain Names page, select Pending Renewal from the All States drop-down list. Select the domain names that you want to renew and click Bulk Renew.

  3. Select one or more domain names that you want to renew and the validity period to be extended. Then, click Bulk Purchase.

    Note

The renewal price of a domain name is subject to the price at the time of renewal. The renewal price of a domain name may be higher than the initial purchase price due to a promotional discount for first-time purchase. The discount does not apply to the renewal.

  4. Read and agree to the terms of service, and click Pay.

  5. Select a payment method, and click Pay. The renewal succeeds after the payment is complete.

Verify the results

To check whether a domain name is renewed, go to the Alibaba Cloud WHOIS page. Query the domain name and view its validity period to check whether the domain name is renewed.
