:What do I do when the new capacity of a disk that is resized in the ECS console does not take effect within the associated instance?

Last Updated:Jun 05, 2023

Problem description

After I resize a disk of an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance in the ECS console by extending the disk capacity, the capacity of the disk is not increased within the instance.

Cause

After you resize a disk of an instance in the ECS console, you must extend the partitions and file systems of the disk within the instance before you can use the new capacity of the disk.

Solution

To prevent data loss caused by accidental changes, we recommend that you create snapshots to back up your data. For information about how to create snapshots, see Create a snapshot of a disk. To extend the file systems of the system disk or a data disk on an instance, perform one of the following operations based on the operating system of the instance.

Operating system

Operation

Windows

Extend the file systems of the system disk or a data disk. For more information, see Extend the partitions and file systems of a disk on a Windows instance.

Linux

Extend the file systems of the system disk or a data disk. For more information, see Extend the partitions and file systems of disks on a Linux instance.
