:How to upgrade the GPU driver for an ECS instance

Last Updated:Dec 30, 2020

Introduction

This article describes how to upgrade the GPU driver for an ECS instance.

Background

Alibaba Cloud reminds you that:

  • Before you perform operations that may cause risks, such as modifying instance configurations or data, we recommend that you check the disaster recovery and fault tolerance capabilities of the instances to ensure data security.
  • You can modify the configurations and data of instances including but not limited to Elastic Compute Service (ECS) and Relational Database Service (RDS) instances. Before the modification, we recommend that you create snapshots or enable RDS log backup.
  • If you have authorized or submitted sensitive information such as the logon account and password in the Alibaba Cloud Management Console, we recommend that you modify such information in a timely manner.

You cannot directly upgrade the version of a GPU Driver. To upgrade the version of a GPU driver, you must uninstall the previous version, restart the system, and then install the new version. We recommend that you create a snapshot of the system disk to back up data during the off-peak period. Then, upgrade the GPU driver by performing the following steps:

  1. If you select auto-install GPU driver when creating an ECS instance, the default installation mode is RUN. For more information, see manually uninstall GPU driver.
  2. After you uninstall the old version driver and restart the system, see manually install GPU driver to download the corresponding version.

Application scope
