A custom image is created from a snapshot of a simple application server. You can use custom images to create multiple simple application servers that have the same configurations. You can also share custom images with Elastic Compute Service (ECS) and use the images to create ECS instances or replace the operating system of existing ECS instances.

Lifecycle of a custom image

After you create a custom image from a snapshot of a simple application server, you can share the image to ECS, copy the image to another region, or use the image to create simple application servers. You can delete custom images that are no longer needed. The following figure shows the lifecycle of a custom image.Lifecycle of a custom image

Billing

Custom images are free of charge. However, you must take note of the following items:
  • When you create a simple application server by using a custom image, you are charged for simple application server resources. For more information, see Billable items and Billing of data transfers.
  • When you share a custom image to ECS and use the custom image to perform operations such as creating an ECS instance, you are charged for the consumed resources. For more information, see Billing overview.

Scenarios

A custom image contains the data stored on the disks of the simple application server from which the custom image is created. You can deploy the website environment of a simple application server and create a custom image from a snapshot of the simple application server. The following table describes the scenarios in which you may want to use a custom image.
Scenario Description
Server O&M When your business requires more servers to provide support, you can use a custom image to create multiple simple application servers that have the same configurations. Custom images eliminate the need to configure multiple simple application servers.
Server upgrade When your simple application server configurations cannot meet your business requirements, or you want to use ECS instances to deploy your services, you can share custom images to ECS and use the custom images to create ECS instances or replace the operating systems of existing ECS instances. This can help you migrate your business from Simple Application Server to ECS.

ECS provides a variety of instance types to meet your business requirements. For more information, see Instance families and Best practices for instance type selection.
