Server Migration Center:Common scenarios

Last Updated:Jun 05, 2023

Server migration is mainly used in scenarios in which you want to migrate servers to the cloud. You can migrate one or more servers to Alibaba Cloud. During server migration, Server Migration Center (SMC) completely replicates the data of source servers without modification. This topic describes the scenarios of server migration.

Migrate servers from self-managed data centers to Alibaba Cloud

To resolve issues such as server deterioration, complex O&M, slow upgrade and scale-out, and high maintenance costs, you can migrate servers from self-managed data centers to Alibaba Cloud. Alibaba Cloud provides high availability, high security, and high elasticity.

Migrate on-premises VMs to Alibaba Cloud

Compared with on-premises VMs, cloud servers provide higher management flexibility and more resources at lower costs. You can use SMC to migrate VMs such as VMware, VirtualBox, Xen, KVM, and Hyper-V to Alibaba Cloud.

Migrate third-party cloud servers to Alibaba Cloud

If the features, performance, security, and costs of third-party cloud servers cannot meet your business requirements, you can use SMC to migrate third-party cloud servers to Alibaba Cloud.

Migrate ECS instances across Alibaba Cloud accounts or regions

If your Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances no longer meet your business requirements even though you upgrade or scale out the instances, you can migrate the ECS instances across Alibaba Cloud accounts, regions, or virtual private clouds (VPCs). Compared with migration over the Internet, migration over a VPC is more efficient and stable. Therefore, if a VPC is available, we recommend that you perform migration over the VPC.
