Security Center:Notification: Upgrade from full protection mode to partial protection mode

Last Updated:Sep 18, 2026

Dear Alibaba Cloud Customer,

To offer a better security service experience, Security Center now offers partial protection mode. This mode enables you to protect specific servers on demand. You can attach the protected server and computing core quotas from your purchased Security Center subscription instances to the servers that require protection. This enables more precise mitigation policies.

Change details

  • Between December 12, 2024, and January 13, 2025 (UTC+8), you can manually upgrade from full protection mode to partial protection mode in the Security Center console.

  • Effective January 13, 2025 (UTC+8), Security Center will exclusively support partial protection mode. Full protection mode will no longer be available.

  • Effective January 13, 2025 (UTC+8), Security Center will automatically upgrade all users from full protection mode to partial protection mode. Authorizations will be automatically attached based on the quantity of purchased authorizations and the number of servers connected to Security Center.

Impact of the change

On January 13, 2025, if your protection mode is full protection, Security Center will automatically upgrade it to partial protection mode. After the automatic upgrade, Security Center will attach the authorizations for your purchased edition to your servers. After the upgrade, you should evaluate and adjust how authorizations are attached to servers.

Important

Before you upgrade the protection mode, whether manually or automatically, ensure that the quantity of purchased authorizations is greater than or equal to the number of servers that require protection. This prevents servers from losing protection after the upgrade because of insufficient authorizations. This helps avoid potential security risks and losses.

  • If the number of servers connected to Security Center under your account is less than or equal to the quantity of purchased authorizations, Security Center automatically attaches authorizations to all servers.

If you add new servers later, you can manually attach authorizations to them or enable Automatically Add New Servers to Security Center. After you enable Automatically Add New Servers to Security Center, Security Center automatically attaches authorizations to new servers until all authorizations are used. For more information, see Manage authorizations for host and container security.

  • If the number of servers connected to Security Center under your account is greater than the quantity of purchased authorizations, Security Center randomly attaches all authorizations to some of the connected servers to avoid wasting authorizations.

You can manually detach the automatically attached authorizations from servers. Batch detachment is also supported. After you detach them, you can attach the released authorizations to specific servers. For more information, see Manage authorizations for host and container security.

To obtain more authorizations, upgrade your Security Center instance. For more information, see Upgrade and downgrade.

FAQ

What is the difference between full protection and partial protection mode?

Full protection mode is a mode in which Security Center enables security protection of the purchased edition for all servers connected to Security Center under your account. Before the introduction of partial protection mode, Security Center only supported full protection mode. In full protection mode, the quantity of authorizations you purchase for a Security Center subscription instance must be greater than or equal to the number of servers or computing cores under your account. Security Center enables protection for all servers under your account by default. You do not need to manually attach authorizations.

Partial protection mode is a new protection mode offered by Security Center. It enables you to purchase the required number of protected servers and computing cores, and attach the purchased authorizations to the servers that require protection.

Security Center only supports switching from full protection to partial protection mode. Switching from partial protection to full protection mode is not supported.

How can I tell if my Security Center is in full protection or partial protection mode?

If your Security Center console does not display an entry for authorization management, your account is in full protection mode. If your console displays an entry for authorization management, your account is in partial protection mode.

The authorization management entry is the Manage button next to Remaining authorizations on the Overview page of the Security Center console.

How do I manually upgrade from full protection to partial protection mode?

Manual upgrades are only supported between December 12, 2024, and January 13, 2025.

  1. Log on to the Security Center console.

  2. In the Partial Protection dialog box, click Switch Now.

If the Partial Protection dialog box does not appear, you can click Partial Protection on the Overview page.

  3. In the Notes dialog box, click OK.

  4. In the Quota Management dialog box, attach authorizations to servers, enable Automatically Add New Servers to Security Center as needed, and then click OK.

  5. Confirm that full protection mode has been switched to partial protection mode.

If the Management entry is displayed in the Remaining authorizations region on the Overview page, it indicates that full protection mode has been switched to partial protection mode.

Thank you for your support and understanding. We will continue to provide you with more efficient and secure services.
