Platform For AI:AI Design (PAI ArtLab)

Last Updated:Aug 14, 2025

PAI ArtLab is a one-stop cloud platform for design powered by Platform for AI (PAI). It integrates open-source AI-generated content (AIGC) models and service resources for enterprises and provides a full-stack AI Design solution. The platform integrates mainstream cloud-based tools for image and video generation and model training, such as Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, and Kohya. It covers the entire AI Design lifecycle, from dataset annotation, model training, and workflow design to application deployment, system integration, and image and video generation. ArtLab also supports unified account management and authorization, AI art education, and the orchestration and optimization of the entire toolchain.

Background information

As AI-generated content (AIGC) models rapidly develop, industry developers need tools that lower the technical barriers for content generation. However, applying these models requires significant AI expertise and programming skills, which increases learning and deployment costs. ArtLab handles the underlying complexity and provides an intuitive, easy-to-use console interface. This lets you use AI capabilities for automated design without writing any code.

Video introduction

Features

Toolbox

The Toolbox lets you launch tools such as Stable Diffusion WebUI, Kohya, and ComfyUI with a single click and no code. You can perform generation tasks in the cloud, including text-to-image, image-to-image, and animated image and video generation. You can also install various model plug-ins, build workflows, and train your own models to meet highly customized AI art requirements.

The Toolbox includes the following popular tools:

  • Stable Diffusion WebUI: Supports text-to-image, image-to-image, and animated image generation.

    image

  • Kohya: Supports intelligent batch generation for dataset image annotation and fine-tuned model training.

    image

  • ComfyUI: Supports building node-based workflows.

Datasets

You can upload and manage image files in cloud-based datasets. The Kohya tool can be used to perform intelligent, automated batch annotation on the uploaded dataset images. You can also manually modify and fine-tune annotations for images in the Datasets module to prepare data for training your own industry-specific models.

Models

The PAI ArtLab Model Marketplace provides more than 400 high-quality, fine-tuned models that are authorized and open-source. You can add them to My Models with a single click, select models to generate images, and upload local models. All models in the Model Marketplace and My Models modules can be used by popular tools for one-click image generation.

Workflows

The Workflow Marketplace provides more than 30 popular industry and custom workflows. You can run pre-built workflows with a single click to easily generate images and videos.

Applications

ArtLab provides low-barrier, out-of-the-box AIGC applications, such as high-definition upscaling, product posters, image variations, and video generation.

Developer Center

The Developer Center provides enterprise developers with services for the entire development lifecycle. It includes core capabilities such as AIGC tool service management, dedicated resource deployment, API debugging and integration, and a comprehensive service monitoring system. This helps enterprises achieve efficient and secure AI application development and management.

You can start, shut down, and delete Toolbox tool services.

Terms

  • Workspace

A workspace corresponds to a project and is used to isolate work or assets. When you activate ArtLab, a default workspace is automatically created. You can also manually create a workspace. Workspaces have the following attributes:

    • Workspaces are region-specific. For example, the workspaces visible in the China (Shanghai) region are different from those in the China (Hangzhou) region.

    • Assets are isolated between workspaces. For example, Workspace A and Workspace B have different content in Datasets and My Models.

  • Region

A region is a cluster of data centers in a specific geographic location. Storage and computing resources are independent between regions.

If resources in the current region are constrained, causing tools to start slowly, you can hover over the image icon in the upper-right corner of the ArtLab interface and switch to another region. Based on the resource layout, we recommend that you prioritize the China (Shanghai) region.

    Note

Before you switch regions, shut down services in the original region to avoid unnecessary charges.

  • Bucket

ArtLab uses Alibaba Cloud Object Storage Service (OSS) as its storage medium. When you activate ArtLab, the system automatically creates a default bucket in OSS to store your data. All data in ArtLab, including but not limited to datasets, transferred and uploaded models, and generated images, is stored in this OSS bucket.

In the upper-right corner of the ArtLab interface, you can hover over the image icon and click the Storage link. This redirects you to the OSS console, where you can view the files in your current bucket. You can also use the OSS console to upload models, nodes, and other required files.

  • Service

A service is a long-running service that is deployed with model files and online prediction logic code. In the Developer Center module, you can create, stop, start, delete, and view invocation information for model services. Each tool that you can use on the web interface corresponds to an underlying service.

  • Shared and Exclusive editions

Compared with the Exclusive edition, the Shared edition starts tools faster and consumes fewer resources. It has some limitations on model plug-in features but meets basic AI art requirements. We recommend using the Shared edition during the free trial period or when resources are limited. The Exclusive edition starts slower and consumes more resources, but it offers richer model plug-in features. We recommend using the Exclusive edition if you have highly customized art requirements.

    Difference

    Shared edition

    Exclusive edition

    Resource difference

    Shared machine resources.

    Dedicated machine resources.

    Billing difference

You are not charged for starting the tool. You are charged only for the actual GPU time consumed during image generation.

For example, if you start a tool, click Generate on the tool's WebUI page, and an image is generated after 10 seconds, you are billed for 10 seconds.

Billing starts after the tool is successfully launched and stops after the tool is closed. You are billed hourly based on the unit price of the cloud machine type selected when you start the tool.

For example, billing starts as soon as you see the tool's WebUI page. If the tool is open for 20 minutes, you are billed for 20 minutes, regardless of whether you use it. Closing the browser tab for the tool also closes the tool. Billing stops after the tool is successfully closed.

Difference in custom installation of models and node plug-ins

Does not support custom plug-in installation. Only a few basic plug-ins are pre-installed, such as text-to-image, image-to-image, and ControlNet.

Supports custom installation of models, nodes, and plug-ins. For more information, see Upload a local model to the PAI ArtLab platform.

    Difference in generation task queuing

Queuing may occur during peak hours.

    No queuing.

ArtLab Advantages

  • One-stop service: An all-in-one AI Design platform that provides end-to-end capabilities for dataset management, data annotation, model management, model training, and AI art.

  • Low barrier to entry: Ready to use out of the box. You do not need to deploy tools yourself and can automate AI design tasks with no code.

  • Rich built-in models and plug-ins: Includes a Model Marketplace that integrates a wide range of models, such as Checkpoint and LoRA models, and offers a variety of mainstream Stable Diffusion plug-ins.

  • Cloud computing resources: Uses high-performance, elastic computing power from Alibaba Cloud. It supports hybrid cluster scheduling policies and pay-as-you-go Auto Scaling to reduce queuing time for image generation, ensuring optimal stability and user experience.

Dependent cloud products

PAI ArtLab depends on the following two Alibaba Cloud products:

  • Object Storage Service (OSS): Used to store, preview, and download files, including but not limited to models, images, videos, and text.

  • Elastic Algorithm Service (PAI-EAS): Used to provide cloud GPUs for online model inference.
