    Object Storage Service:Regions and endpoints

    When you deploy Object Storage Service (OSS) across multiple regions, your choice of region and endpoint directly affects business performance, cost, and compliance. Understanding the features of each region and its endpoint configuration helps you improve access performance, optimize resource allocation, and meet data compliance requirements.

    A region is the physical location of an Alibaba Cloud data center. Consider the following factors when you choose a region:

    • Interconnection with other cloud products: If you deploy other Alibaba Cloud products and OSS in the same region, they can communicate over the internal network. This eliminates public traffic fees and provides a more stable network connection.

    • Cost: Product prices and promotional policies vary by region. Choose a region with more favorable pricing to control costs. For more information, see OSS Pricing.

    • Compliance: Different regions or industries have different data compliance requirements. Choose a region that meets your business regulations.

    • Features: New features are often released for public preview in specific regions. To use the latest features, create a bucket in a designated region. For more information about feature releases, see Release notes.

    • Proximity: Choose the region closest to your main users or applications. This can significantly reduce network latency and improve access performance.

    How to quickly test network latency for different regions

    You can use the curl command to quickly test the access latency from your on-premises network to OSS endpoints in different regions. This helps you decide which region to choose. Lower values for time_connect and time_starttransfer usually indicate better network quality.

    Public cloud

    The names of some regions outside China may be displayed differently on the OSS Pricing page and the resource plan purchase page. However, they all refer to the same physical location. For example, the US (Silicon Valley) region may be displayed as US West 1 or US West. For more information, see OSS Pricing or purchase a resource plan.

    Important

    According to a policy adjustment, to improve the compliance and security of OSS, new users who activate OSS after March 20, 2025 cannot call data API operations, such as uploading or downloading files, through the default public domain name for buckets in the Chinese mainland. You must access OSS using a custom domain name (CNAME).
