    Global Accelerator:Add and manage acceleration areas

    After you create a basic Global Accelerator instance, you must add an acceleration area. An acceleration area is the area that requires accelerated access to your service.

    Background information

    An acceleration area is a collection of Alibaba Cloud regions. Clients can connect to the nearest acceleration region of the Alibaba Cloud global transmission network by sending requests to an accelerated IP address. For more information about the acceleration areas and regions supported by Global Accelerator, see Acceleration areas and regions supported by basic GA instances.

    The acceleration areas of basic Global Accelerator instances have the following characteristics:

    • Acceleration area and region: You can add only one acceleration area and one acceleration region.

    • Bandwidth of an acceleration region: The bandwidth of an acceleration region is determined by the bandwidth metering method of the GA instance.

      • If you set the bandwidth metering method of a GA instance to Pay-By-Bandwidth, the bandwidth of an acceleration region is throttled based on the maximum bandwidth of the basic bandwidth plan that is associated with the GA instance.

      • If you set the bandwidth metering method to Pay-By-Data-Transfer, you can specify the bandwidth of an acceleration region.

    • Accelerated IP address: By default, Elastic IP Address (EIP) are used as accelerated IP addresses. Only IPv4 is supported. You can accelerate access from IPv4 clients to IPv4 services.

      By default, you can add up to 20 accelerated IP addresses to a basic Global Accelerator instance. You can associate accelerated IP addresses with endpoints. An accelerated IP address can be in one of the following states:

      • Associated: The accelerated IP address is associated with an endpoint. After you associate an accelerated IP address with an endpoint, a mapping is created between the accelerated IP address and the endpoint. Global Accelerator distributes traffic to the corresponding backend service based on the mapping.

      • Idle: The accelerated IP address is not associated with an endpoint. By default, a basic Global Accelerator instance can have 10 idle accelerated IP addresses. When the number of idle accelerated IP addresses reaches the upper limit, you cannot add idle accelerated IP addresses or disassociate accelerated IP addresses from endpoints.

      If you want to add more accelerated IP addresses or increase the quota of idle accelerated IP addresses, you can increase the gaplus_quota_basic_gaip_limit quota or gaplus_quota_basic_gaip_idle_limit quota on the Quota Management page. For more information, see the "Adjust quotas" section of the Manage GA quotas topic.

    Note

    • If your basic Global Accelerator instance was created after August 1, 2023, you can create multiple IP addresses for an acceleration region and use internal-facing Network Load Balancer (NLB) instances as backend services. If your basic Global Accelerator instance was created before this time and you want to use this feature, contact your account manager to upgrade your GA instance.

    • If your Global Accelerator instances were created before August 1, 2023, the following limits apply:

      • You can add only one acceleration area and one acceleration region to each GA instance.

      • You can add only one endpoint group and one endpoint to each GA instance.

      • You cannot specify an NLB instance as an endpoint.

      • You do not need to add an accelerated IP address or associate an accelerated IP address with an endpoint.

    Add an acceleration area

    Before you can add an acceleration area, the following requirements must be met:

    • A basic Global Accelerator instance is created. For more information, see Create a basic GA instance.

    • A basic bandwidth plan is purchased and associated with the GA instance whose bandwidth metering method is pay-by-bandwidth.

    1. Log on to the GA console.

    2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Basic Instance.

    3. On the Instances page, find the basic Global Accelerator instance that you want to manage and click its ID.

    4. On the instance details page, click the Acceleration Areas tab. Then, click Add Acceleration Area.

    5. In the Add Acceleration Area dialog box, configure the parameters described in the following table and click OK.

      Description

      Region

      Select the region where acceleration is required. For more information about acceleration areas and regions, see Overview.

      Bandwidth

      Specify the bandwidth of the acceleration region. Unit: Mbit/s.

      • If you set the bandwidth metering method of a GA instance to Pay-By-Bandwidth, the bandwidth of an acceleration region is throttled based on the maximum bandwidth of the basic bandwidth plan that is associated with the GA instance.

      • If you set the bandwidth metering method to Pay-By-Data-Transfer, you can specify the bandwidth of an acceleration region.

        Bandwidth range: 2 to 20,000 Mbit/s.

      Internet Protocol

      Select the IP version that is used to connect to Global Accelerator. Only IPv4 is supported.

      ISP Line Type

      Select an ISP line type for the Global Accelerator. This parameter is available only to Global Accelerator instances whose bandwidth metering method is pay-by-data-transfer.

      • BGP (Multi-ISP): provides premium BGP lines across the world. This is the default line type. BGP lines from different Internet service providers (ISPs) can be used. The optimal BGP line is automatically selected to ensure network stability. The following ISPs are supported: China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile, China Mobile Tietong, China Netcom, CERNET, NRTA, Dr.Peng Group, and Founder Broadband.

        All acceleration regions support BGP (Multi-ISP).

      • BGP Pro: BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro lines optimize data transmission to the Chinese mainland and improve connection quality for international services. Cross-border connections are established by using Chinese mainland ISP services when BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro lines provide services to users in the Chinese mainland (except data centers). This reduces network latency.

        BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro is available only in the China (Hong Kong) and Japan (Tokyo) regions.

    Add an accelerated IP address

    After you add an acceleration area and an acceleration region, you must add an accelerated IP address. Clients can connect to the nearest acceleration region of the Alibaba Cloud global transmission network by sending requests to the accelerated IP address.

    1. Log on to the GA console.

    2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Basic Instance.

    3. On the Instances page, find the basic Global Accelerator instance that you want to manage and click its ID.

    4. On the instance details page, click the Acceleration Areas tab, and then click Add Accelerated IP Address.

    5. Optional: In the Associate Endpoint dialog box, select the endpoint to be associated and click OK.

      Note

      • Before you perform this operation, make sure that an endpoint that is not associated with another accelerated IP address is created. For more information, see Add and manage endpoint groups and endpoints.

      • Before you select the endpoint to be associated, the system automatically allocates an accelerated IP address to the acceleration region. If you do not select an endpoint and click Cancel, the accelerated IP address becomes Idle. By default, a basic Global Accelerator instance can have 10 idle accelerated IP addresses.

    Associate an idle accelerated IP address with an endpoint

    After you associate an idle accelerated IP address with an endpoint, a mapping is created between the accelerated IP address and the endpoint. Global Accelerator distributes traffic to the corresponding backend service based on the mapping.

    Before you associate an idle accelerated IP address with an endpoint, make sure that an endpoint that is not associated with another accelerated IP address is created. For more information, see Add and manage endpoint groups and endpoints.

    1. Log on to the GA console.

    2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Basic Instance.

    3. On the Instances page, find the basic Global Accelerator instance that you want to manage and click its ID.

    4. On the instance details page, click the Acceleration Areas tab, find the idle accelerated IP address that you want to associate, and then click Associate Endpoint in the Associate Endpoint column.

    5. In the Associate Endpoint dialog box, select the endpoint that you want to associate and click OK.

    Modify the bandwidth of an acceleration region

    You can modify the bandwidth of an acceleration region only for a basic Global Accelerator instance whose bandwidth metering method is pay-by-data-transfer.

    1. Log on to the GA console.

    2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Basic Instance.

    3. On the Instances page, find the basic Global Accelerator instance that you want to manage and click its ID.

    4. On the instance details page, click the Acceleration Areas tab and click Modify Bandwidth.

    5. In the Modify Bandwidth dialog box, modify the bandwidth of the acceleration region and click OK.

      Bandwidth range: 2 to 20,000 Mbit/s.

    Description

    Disassociate an accelerated IP address from an endpoint

    After you disassociate an accelerated IP address from an endpoint, the status of the accelerated IP address changes to Idle. When the number of idle accelerated IP addresses reaches the upper limit (10 by default), you cannot disassociate accelerated IP addresses from endpoints.

    1. On the Acceleration Areas tab, find the accelerated IP address that you want to disassociate and click Disassociate in the Actions column.

    2. In the message that appears, click Unbind.

    Delete an accelerated IP address

    1. On the Acceleration Areas tab, find the accelerated IP address that you want to delete and click Delete in the Actions column.

    2. Delete the accelerated IP address based on its status.

      • If the accelerated IP address is in the Idle state

        In the message that appears, click Delete.

      • If the accelerated IP address is in the Associated state

        In the dialog box that appears, select Delete Accelerated IP Address Only or Delete Endpoint Bound to Accelerated IP Address, and then click Delete.

    Delete an acceleration area

    Warning

    You can delete an acceleration area. After you delete the acceleration area, Global Accelerator no longer provides acceleration services in this area.

    Before you delete an acceleration area, take note of the following items:

    • You cannot delete an acceleration area that has accelerated IP addresses in the Associated state. You must disassociate all accelerated IP addresses from endpoints before you delete the acceleration area.

    • If all accelerated IP addresses are in the Idle state, you can delete the acceleration area. The system deletes all idle accelerated IP addresses in the acceleration area.

    1. On the Acceleration Areas tab, find the acceleration area that you want to delete and click Delete in the Actions column.

    2. In the message that appears, click OK.
