Release protection prevents accidental release of pay-as-you-go E-MapReduce (EMR) clusters running critical workloads or storing important data. With release protection enabled, a cluster cannot be released directly — you must disable the protection first.
Supported cluster types
Release protection is supported only for pay-as-you-go clusters of the following types: DataLake, Dataflow, OLAP, DataServing, and custom.
Enable release protection when creating a cluster
Release protection is disabled by default. To enable it at cluster creation time, go to the Basic Configuration step, expand Advanced Settings, and turn on Release Protection.

Enable or disable release protection for an existing cluster
Log on to the EMR console. In the left-side navigation pane, click EMR on ECS.
On the EMR on ECS page, find the cluster and click its name.
On the Basic Information tab, go to the Cluster Information section and turn on or off Release Protection.
In the confirmation dialog, click OK.
Check release protection status
On the EMR on ECS page, click the cluster name to open the Basic Information tab. In the Cluster Information section, check the Release Protection field:
On: Release protection is enabled.
Off: Release protection is disabled.
