Elastic Compute Service:Dedicated Block Storage Cluster

Last Updated:May 06, 2025

The Dedicated Block Storage Cluster service provides block storage resources in clusters. Clusters are physically isolated. Exclusive access to the resources in a dedicated block storage cluster is granted to the creator of the cluster. Dedicated block storage clusters can be used to improve the security and O&M efficiency of your business data storage.

Features

Note

Dedicated Block Storage Cluster is currently available in the following regions: China (Hangzhou), China (Shanghai), China (Beijing), China (Zhangjiakou), China (Ulanqab), China (Shenzhen), China (Heyuan), Indonesia (Jakarta), Germany (Frankfurt), and China South 1 Finance.

Dedicated block storage clusters are physically isolated from public block storage clusters. The owner of each dedicated block storage cluster has exclusive access to all resources in the cluster. If you own a dedicated block storage cluster, you do not need to share physical resources in the cluster with other users. You can use a monitoring feature to view cluster information such as cluster status and capacities in real time.

Unlike public block storage clusters, dedicated block storage clusters offer physical isolation and exclusive resources. After you purchase a dedicated block storage cluster, you can create dedicated disks in the cluster. Dedicated disks provide the same features as their public counterparts and grant you exclusive access to their physical resources. You can use the Elastic Compute Service (ECS) console or call API operations to manage disks in dedicated block storage clusters.

Dedicated Block Storage Cluster

Disks in dedicated block storage clusters can be used as system or data disks:

  • To use the disks as system disks on ECS instances, you must enable Dedicated Block Storage Cluster when you create ECS instances. For more information, see Create a system disk in a dedicated block storage cluster.

  • To use the disks as data disks on ECS instances, enable Dedicated Block Storage Cluster and specify a dedicated block storage cluster when you add data disks during the creation of an ECS instance. The added data disks are all created in the specified dedicated block storage cluster. Alternatively, you can separately create disks in a dedicated block storage cluster. The created disks can be attached only as data disks to ECS instances within the same zone as the cluster, regardless of whether the instances reside on dedicated hosts. For more information, see Create a data disk in a dedicated block storage cluster.

Use scenarios

Resources in dedicated block storage clusters are physically isolated from those in public block storage clusters. Each dedicated block storage cluster is dedicated to its owner. Dedicated block storage clusters are suitable for industries or sectors that require high data security, such as finance, healthcare, and public service sectors.

  • Basic dedicated block storage cluster

This type of cluster is primarily designed for general-purpose data storage scenarios, such as file sharing, backup, and restoration. A basic dedicated block storage cluster provides data redundancy and backup capabilities for reliable data protection and restoration. Basic dedicated block storage clusters provide moderate storage performance and are suitable for applications with typical workloads.

  • Performance dedicated block storage cluster

This type of cluster is tailored for high-performance data storage scenarios, such as databases, virtualization, and cloud computing. A performance dedicated block storage cluster offers higher storage performance and advanced data protection mechanisms, which supports faster and more reliable data access and processing. Performance dedicated block storage clusters often support high-speed network connectivity and data caching technologies and are capable of handling high loads and complex workloads.

Limits

The following table describes the limits on Dedicated Block Storage Cluster.

Item

Limits

Cluster capacity

  • Minimum capacity: 60 TiB (61,440 GiB).

  • Maximum capacity: 2,280 TiB (2,334,720 GiB).

  • The capacity of each dedicated block storage cluster can be changed by multiples of 12,288 GiB.

Note

If the capacity of a dedicated block storage cluster is less than 576 TiB, the maximum throughput per TiB cannot exceed 52 MB/s. If the capacity of a dedicated block storage cluster is greater than 576 TiB, the maximum throughput per TiB cannot exceed 26 MB/s.

Disk category

Dedicated block storage clusters of different performance types support different disk categories.

  • Enterprise SSDs (ESSDs) at performance level 0 (PL0 ESSDs) can be created in basic dedicated block storage clusters.

  • PL1 ESSDs can be created in performance dedicated block storage clusters.

For more information about ESSDs, see ESSDs.

Note

You cannot modify the configurations of ESSDs in dedicated block storage clusters.

Lifecycle management

Create a dedicated block storage cluster

Dedicated block storage clusters are classified into the basic and performance types. Select a cluster type based on your business requirements. For information about how to create a dedicated block storage cluster, see Create a dedicated block storage cluster.

After a dedicated block storage cluster is created, you can view its information such as status, capacity, and dedicated disks. For more information, see Related operations.

Create disks in a dedicated block storage cluster

Dedicated block storage clusters of different performance types support different disk categories. System disks and data disks are created in different ways in dedicated block storage clusters. For more information, see Create disks in a dedicated block storage cluster.

Migrate disks in a dedicated block storage cluster

Disks can be migrated into or out of a dedicated block storage cluster or migrated between dedicated block storage clusters. For more information, see Migrate disks into or out of a dedicated block storage cluster.

Extend the capacity of a dedicated block storage cluster

If your dedicated block storage cluster has the insufficient remaining capacity and does not reach the maximum capacity of 2,280 TiB, you can extend the cluster capacity based on your business requirements. For more information, see Extend the capacity of a dedicated block storage cluster.
