This topic describes the billing methods and billable items of E-MapReduce (EMR) and provides an overview of the references, such as Switch from pay-as-you-go to subscription, Expiration and overdue payments, View billing information, Refunds, and Billing FAQ.

Billing methods

EMR supports the subscription and pay-as-you-go billing methods. When you purchase a cluster, you can select a billing method based on your business requirements.
Billing method Description
Subscription Subscription is a billing method in which you must pay for resources before you can use them. You are charged for the resources based on the subscription duration, which is specified in months or years. For more information, see Subscription.
Pay-as-you-go Pay-as-you-go is a billing method that allows you to use resources before you pay for them. You are charged for the resources every hour on the hour. For more information, see Pay-as-you-go.

Billable items

The fees for the use of an EMR cluster consist of fees for the EMR service, ECS instances, and Internet traffic of the master node of the cluster. Billable items
Billable item Description
EMR service EMR provides multi-dimensional cluster management features, such as page display and control, support for API operations and SDKs, monitoring and alerting, O&M tools, and automatic server-side O&M.

For more information about the pricing of the EMR service, see Subscription and Pay-as-you-go.

Note Subscription EMR clusters are at a discount now. If you create a subscription EMR cluster, you are not charged for the EMR service.
ECS instances ECS instances support two billing methods: subscription and pay-as-you-go. The billing method of the ECS instances that are used for an EMR cluster is based on the billing method that you select when you purchase the EMR cluster.
  • Subscription: If you select the subscription billing method, you must pay for the ECS instances when you purchase the EMR cluster. For more information, see Subscription.
  • Pay-as-you-go: If you select the pay-as-you-go billing method, you are charged for the ECS instances when you use the EMR cluster. For more information, see Pay-as-you-go.
Note When you create an EMR cluster, the system purchases and creates ECS instances for the EMR cluster based on the node specifications you select. You do not need to prepare ECS instances for the cluster in advance. If your Alibaba Cloud account has a discount voucher for ECS instances, the discount is automatically applied when you create the cluster.
Internet traffic of the master node By default, 8 Mbit/s Internet bandwidth is enabled for the master node of an EMR cluster. In a high-availability cluster, 8 Mbit/s Internet bandwidth is enabled for each of the master nodes by default. The Internet traffic fee of the master node is not included in the EMR service fee and is separately calculated. The pay-as-you-go billing method is used. The fee for outbound Internet traffic is calculated on an hourly basis. Inbound Internet traffic is free of charge.

For example, if the outbound Internet traffic consumed within 1 hour is 10 GB, the fee per hour is calculated by using the following formula: 10 GB × Price per GB (Unit: USD). The Internet traffic fee slightly varies among regions. For more information, see ECS bandwidth prices.

Reference Description
Switch from pay-as-you-go to subscription If the billing method of an existing EMR cluster cannot meet your business requirements, you can switch the billing method.

You can switch the billing method only from pay-as-you-go to subscription. For more information, see Switch from pay-as-you-go to subscription.

Renewal After a subscription EMR cluster expires, the cluster is automatically released.

If you want to continue using the cluster, you can manually renew the cluster or enable auto-renewal for the cluster before the cluster is released. After the cluster is renewed, the service life of the ECS instances and EMR service is prolonged. For more information, see Renewal.

Expiration and overdue payments If you have an overdue payment, the system sends you a notification. To continue using your cluster, you must settle your overdue payment in a timely manner. For more information, see Expiration and overdue payments.
View billing information If you have questions about the billing of EMR clusters, you can view the bills and billing details. For more information, see View billing information.
Refunds If you no longer need a pay-as-you-go cluster, you can release the cluster at any time. If you no longer need a subscription cluster, submit a ticket.
Billing FAQ If you have questions about the billing of EMR clusters when you purchase an EMR cluster, follow the instructions in Billing FAQ.

If you cannot resolve your issue based on the instructions, submit a ticket.
