You can use Hybrid Backup Recovery (HBR) to back up SAP HANA instances deployed on Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances and restore these SAP HANA instances as needed. This topic describes how to back up an SAP HANA instance.

Prerequisites

Background information

If you need to restore a database instance to another instance, make sure that these instances use the same backup vault in the same region.

Create a backup plan

To create a backup plan, perform the following steps:

  1. Log on to the HBR console.
  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > SAP HANA Backup.
  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.
  4. On the SAP HANA Backup page, click the SAP HANA Instance tab.
  5. Find the SAP HANA instance that you want to back up and click Back Up in the Actions column.
  6. In the Create Backup Plan panel, select the databases that you want to back up and click Next.
Note You cannot back up stopped databases.
  7. In the Configure Plan step, set the parameters. Click OK.

Configure the retention period of backup data (Optional)

By default, HBR retains the backup data of SAP HANA instances for 10 years. To customize the retention period for the backup data of an SAP HANA instance, perform the following steps:

  1. On the SAP HANA Instances tab of the SAP HANA Backup page, find the instance and click its ID.
  2. On the SAP HANA Instance Details page, click the Databases tab. Find the database, and choose More > Configure Retention Policy in the Actions column.
  3. In the Configure Retention Policy panel, set the parameters in the following table. Click Create.
    Parameter Description
    Retention Policy
    • Limited

Select this option if you need to specify a limited retention period. You must also specify an interval at which retention jobs are run.

    • Permanent

Select this option if you need HBR to permanently retain the backup data.

Retention Job Interval This parameter is required only if the Retention Policy parameter is set to Limited. The interval at which retention jobs are run. The interval is accurate to seconds.
Note We recommend that you do not back up data during peak hours.
Retention Period This parameter is required only if you set the Retention Policy parameter to Limited. The retention period of the backup data.

Unit: days, weeks, months, or years. Minimum retention period: 1 day. Maximum retention period: 10 years.

Note HBR deletes the expired records and data that are related to Backint and file backup. The deleted records and data cannot be restored. We recommend that you set the retention period based on your business requirements.
Note To modify the retention period of the backup data, repeat the preceding steps and specify a new retention period.

What to do next

After a backup plan is created, you can manage the backup plan. For example, you can cancel backup jobs and view backups.

  • Manage a backup plan

In the HBR console, you can view the information and status of a created backup plan and manage the backup plan.

    • On the Backup Plans tab, view the information and status of the backup plan.
    • You can click a button in the Actions column to manage the backup plan as needed. In the Actions column, you can click Modify, Run Now, Suspend Plan, Resume Plan, or Delete Plan. If you delete the backup plan, HBR no longer runs backup jobs for the plan but the backup data is retained.
  • View or cancel a backup job.

On the Backup Jobs tab, you can view the information and status of the backup jobs that are run immediately or as scheduled. You can also cancel any running backup jobs.

  • View backups.

You can view all backups in the HBR console. To view backups of an SAP HANA instance, perform the following steps:

    1. On the SAP HANA Instances tab, find the instance whose backups you want to view and click its ID.
    2. On the SAP HANA Instance page, click the Backups tab.
    3. View the information of backups.
