Data Lake Formation:Set up DLF

Last Updated:Nov 05, 2025

Before using Data Lake Formation (DLF), you must perform a one-time setup process. This process involves two main steps: authorize DLF permissions and activate the service. First, you grant DLF permissions to access other Alibaba Cloud services. This is a one-off operation for your entire account. Second, you activate DLF in a region where you intend to use it.

Authorize DLF permissions

The first time you access the DLF console, you must grant it the permissions. This creates a service-linked role named AliyunDLFNextWorkFlowDefaultRole that allows DLF to interact with other cloud resources on your behalf.

  1. Log on to the DLF console.

  2. Click Grant Permissions.

  3. On the RAM Quick Authorization page, click Authorize.

  4. Return to the DLF console and verify Grant Permissions to Access Cloud Resources is done.

Note

To access DLF as a RAM user, ask the Alibaba Cloud account owner or a RAM administrator to grant necessary permissions. For more information, see DLF RAM authorization action reference.

Activate DLF in a region

After authorizing permissions for your account, you must activate DLF in a region you plan to use it.

  1. Log on to the DLF console.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select the region where you want to activate DLF.

  3. On the right side of Activate Data Lake Formation (DLF), click Activate.

After the activation is successful, you can begin to manage your lakehouse resources.
