Cloud Monitor:Network jitter

Last Updated:Mar 05, 2026

Network jitter is instability in the operating system kernel that occurs during data packet transmission. This jitter can increase service response times or cause service interruptions, which affects application performance and the user experience. This topic describes how to use the network jitter feature to analyze and identify the causes of network jitter on an ECS instance.

Limits

  • Region limitations

This feature is only available in the Chinese mainland and China (Hong Kong) regions.

  • Limitations

If you use a Resource Access Management (RAM) user, ensure that the Alibaba Cloud account has granted the AliyunECSReadOnlyAccess, AliyunSubManageFullAccess, and AliyunSysomFullAccess system policies to the RAM user. For more information, see Grant permissions to a RAM user.

Scenarios

The network jitter diagnosis feature supports the following scenarios.

  • Check whether network jitter is caused by the application receiving data packets slowly.

  • Check whether network jitter is caused by slow processing of data packets by the kernel during software interrupts.

  • You can determine whether network jitter is caused by the slow processing of data packets in the kernel qdisc queue.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the CloudMonitor console, select the target workspace, and in the navigation pane on the left, click All Features.

  2. On the All Features page, click ECS Insight.

  3. At the top of the page, click System Diagnosis (SysOM).

  4. Set Diagnostic Mode to Node Diagnosis. From the Diagnostic Type list, select Network Diagnosis. From the Diagnostic Item list, select Network Jitter. Select the target Instance ID and click Run Diagnosis.

  5. In the Diagnostic Records area, click View Report.

Diagnostic report

  • Basic information

  • This section contains basic information about the diagnosis, including the instance ID (resource ID), diagnostic item, diagnostic report ID, and the diagnosis start time.

  • Diagnostic conclusion

This section provides the conclusion of the diagnosis and describes the main causes of the network jitter.

  • Diagnostic suggestion

This section provides suggestions based on the diagnostic results to reduce or eliminate network jitter.

  • Diagnostic details

This section displays detailed diagnostic data and explains the main fields.

    • Time: The time when the network jitter was captured.

    • Latency (ms): The delay in network data transfer.

    • Details: The details of the network jitter, including information about processes and sockets.

    • Type: The type of network jitter.
