Price limit

The US stock market does not limit the number of ticks by which stock prices rise and fall and uses circuit breakers to prevent market crashes. The US Securities and Exchange Commission implements the limit up-limit down mechanism on individual stocks. If the trading price of a stock rises or falls by 10% within 5 minutes, its trading is stopped. If the price does not return to the normal fluctuation range within 15 seconds, the trading remains stopped for 5 minutes. There are three levels of circuit breakers for stock indexes in the US. Take S&P 500 as an example. If the index falls by 5%, the trading stops for 15 minutes. If the index falls by 10%, the trading stops for an hour. If the index plunges by 20%, the trading on the stock exchange stops for the remaining session of the day.
