Cloud Backup protects MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server databases on your on-premises servers. This guide walks you through activating the service, backing up a database, and restoring your data.
Workflow overview
-
The procedures for MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server databases are essentially the same. This guide uses MySQL as an example.
-
To back up a database, you must obtain the username and password from the database administrator.
| Step | Task | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Activate Cloud Backup | Activate the service (free). You are charged only for vault rental and storage usage. |
| 2 | Register a database | Register your database and install a backup client on the on-premises server. |
| 3 | Precheck a database | Run a precheck to identify issues that could cause backup failures. |
| 4 | Back up a database | Create a backup plan with your preferred schedule and policies. |
| 5 | Restore a database | Restore data from recovery points when needed (free). |
Step 1: Activate Cloud Backup
Activation is free. After you activate the service, you are charged only for vault rental and storage usage.
Free tier: Each backup vault is free for the first 30 days. A free capacity of 100 GB is provided for each backup vault per month. After the free quota is used up, you are charged based on tiered pricing. For more information, see Billing methods and billable items.
For detailed instructions, see Activate Cloud Backup.
Step 2: Register a database
Register your database in the Cloud Backup console and install a backup client on the on-premises server where the database is deployed.
You are not charged for using Cloud Backup if you only register a database without creating a backup plan.
For detailed instructions, see Register an on-premises MySQL database.
Step 3: Precheck a database
Run a precheck to verify that your database can be backed up successfully and to identify issues that may cause backup failures.
For detailed instructions, see Precheck a database.
Step 4: Back up a database
Create a backup plan by configuring the following settings:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Backup vault | The vault where backup data is stored. |
| Data source | The database to back up. |
| Backup cycle | How often backups run. |
| Retention period | How long backup data is kept. |
| Backup policies | Backup types such as full backup and incremental backup. |
After you create a backup plan, Cloud Backup runs the plan on schedule and continuously backs up the specified database.
For detailed instructions, see Back up an on-premises MySQL database.
Step 5: Restore a database
Restoring a database is free. You can restore data from recovery points to the source database or another registered database in the same region and account.
For detailed instructions, see Restore an on-premises MySQL database.
