Auto Scaling:Manually change instance states

Last Updated:Sep 08, 2026

This topic describes how to manually change an instance to or from standby mode, manually change an instance to or from protected mode, and manually change an instance to a disabled state.

Instance states in a scaling group

From the time an instance joins a scaling group until it is removed from the scaling group, all possible service states of the instance in the scaling group include Adding, Pending Add, In Service, Standby, Protected, Removing, Pending Remove, and Stopped. For more information about the instance state in a scaling group, see Instance lifecycle states.

The following table describes the manual state changes that are supported for instances in a scaling group.

Considerations

The following table describes what to expect after you change the state of an ECS instance or ECI instance in a scaling group, and after you remove an instance from a scaling group. Review the row that matches your operation before you make the change.

Stage

Description

After an instance is put into the standby state

  • If load balancing is configured for the scaling group, the weight of the ECS instance or ECI instance as an SLB backend server is set to 0.

  • The instance remains in the standby state until you move it out of the standby state.

  • Auto Scaling does not manage the lifecycle of the instance. You manage the instance yourself.

  • When a scaling activity occurs in the scaling group, instances in the standby state are not removed.

  • If an instance in the standby state is stopped or restarted, the health check status of the instance is not updated.

  • You must remove an instance in the standby state from the scaling group before you can release it.

  • If you delete the scaling group, the instance is removed from the scaling group and automatically exits the standby state.

Note: If the scaling group manages the entire lifecycle of the instance, the instance is released. Otherwise, the instance is not released and can run as expected. For more information about how the lifecycle of an ECS instance or ECI instance is managed, see Lifecycle of instances in a scaling group.

After an instance is moved out of the standby state

  • The ECS instance or ECI instance returns to the in service state.

  • If a load balancer instance is associated with the scaling group, the weight of the instance is 50 by default when the instance is added to the load balancer instance again.

  • If the instance is stopped or restarted, the health check status of the instance is updated again.

  • When a scale-in activity occurs in the scaling group, Auto Scaling can remove the instance from the scaling group.

Note: If the scaling group manages the entire lifecycle of the instance that is moved out of the standby state, Auto Scaling releases the instance. Otherwise, the instance can still run as expected. For more information about how the lifecycle of an ECS instance or ECI instance is managed, see Lifecycle of instances in a scaling group.

After an instance is put into the protected state

  • If load balancing is configured for the scaling group, the weight of the ECS instance or ECI instance as an SLB backend server is not affected.

  • The instance remains in the protected state until you move it out of the protected state.

  • If a change in the number of instances in the scaling group or a monitoring task triggers a scale-in activity, instances in the protected state are not removed. You must manually remove such an instance before you can release it.

  • If the instance is stopped or restarted, the health check status of the instance is not updated.

After an instance is put into the stopped state

After an ECS instance in a scaling group is switched to the disabled state, it stops providing services once shut down. Some resources are automatically no longer billed. For example, after an ECS instance in a scaling group is switched to the disabled state, you do not need to manually enable the default stop mode for pay-as-you-go instances in the ECS console. The corresponding vCPUs, memory, and fixed public IP address are released, and charges for these resources stop. However, other resources such as cloud disks and EIPs are retained and continue to be charged.

Manually put an instance into or move it out of the standby state

Put an ECS instance or ECI instance that you do not need temporarily into the standby state. Move the instance out of the standby state when you need it to serve traffic again.

  1. Log on to the Auto Scaling console.

  2. Log on to the Auto Scaling console.

  3. In the navigation pane on the left, click Scaling Groups.

  4. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  5. Find the scaling group that you want to manage. In the Actions column, click Details.

  6. At the top of the page, click the Instance Management tab.

  7. Select the source of the ECS instance or ECI instance.

    • To select an automatically created ECS instance or ECI instance, find the Auto Created list.

    • To select a manually created ECS instance or ECI instance, find the Manually Added list.

  8. Manually put the instance into or move it out of the standby state.

Put an instance into the standby state

    1. Use one of the following methods to put an ECS instance or ECI instance into the standby state:

      • Single instance — Find the ECS instance or ECI instance that you want to manage. In the Actions column, click Switch to Standby State.

      • Multiple instances — Select the ECS instances or ECI instances that you want to manage. At the bottom of the instance list, click Switch to Standby State.

    2. Then, in the Switch to Standby State dialog box that appears, select the operation method that matches your change plan. The following table describes the two methods.

    Operation

    Description

    Steps

    Synchronous operation

The console backend processes the task after you submit it. If the scaling group involves many resources, the operation takes a long time and can even fail with a timeout error. For such scaling groups, select the asynchronous operation instead.

Do not select Asynchronously Switch to Standby, and then click OK.

    Asynchronous operation (Recommended)

The console returns the acceptance result immediately after you submit the task. You can then view the final execution status in Scaling Activities in the console.

Select Asynchronously Switch to Standby, and then click OK. On the Scaling Rules and Activities tab at the top of the page, click the Scaling Activities tab to view the execution status of putting the instance into the standby state.

Move an instance out of the standby state

    1. Use one of the following methods to move an ECS instance or ECI instance out of the standby state:

      • Single instance — Find the ECS instance or ECI instance that you want to manage. In the Actions column, click Remove from Standby.

      • Multiple instances — Select the ECS instances or ECI instances that you want to manage. At the bottom of the instance list, click Remove from Standby.

    2. Then, in the Remove from Standby dialog box that appears, select the operation method that matches your removal plan.

Do not select Asynchronously Remove from Standby, and then click OK.

    Asynchronous operation (Recommended)

The console returns the acceptance result immediately after you submit the task. You can then view the final execution status in Scaling Activities in the console.

Select Asynchronously Remove from Standby, and then click OK. On the Scaling Rules and Activities tab at the top of the page, click the Scaling Activities tab to view the execution status of moving the instance out of the standby state.

Manually put an instance into or move it out of the protected state

Put an ECS instance or ECI instance that you do not want Auto Scaling to remove from the scaling group into the protected state. Move the instance out of the protected state when it no longer needs this protection.

  1. Log on to the Auto Scaling console.

  2. In the navigation pane on the left, click Scaling Groups.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. Find the scaling group you want to operate on, and click Details in the corresponding Actions column.

  5. At the top of the page, click the Instance Management tab.

  6. Select the source of ECS instances.

    • To select automatically created ECS instances, click the Auto Created tab.

    • To select manually added ECS instances, click the Manually Added tab.

  7. Manually put the instance into or move it out of the protected state.

Put an instance into the protected state

    1. Use one of the following methods to put an ECS instance or ECI instance into the protected state:

      • Single instance — Find the ECS instance or ECI instance that you want to manage. In the corresponding Actions column, click Switch to Protected State.

      • Multiple instances — Select the ECS instances or ECI instances that you want to manage. At the bottom of the instance list, click Switch to Protected State.

    2. Then, click OK.

Move an instance out of the protected state

    1. Use one of the following methods to move an ECS instance or ECI instance out of the protected state:

      • Single instance — Find the ECS instance or ECI instance that you want to manage. In the corresponding Actions column, click Remove from Protected State.

      • Multiple instances — Select the ECS instances or ECI instances that you want to manage. At the bottom of the instance list, click Remove from Protected State.

    2. Then, click OK.

Manually put an instance into the stopped state

This operation applies only to ECS-type scaling groups, and the scaling group must use a VPC network type. If the recycling mode of instances in the scaling group is the stopped-with-charges-saved mode, and the instances in the scaling group are automatically created ECS instances, you can manually change the ECS instances in the scaling group to the stopping state. When a scale-out activity occurs, Auto Scaling will preferentially start the ECS instances in the stopping state.

  6. Find the Auto Created list.

  7. Find the ECS instance that you want to manage. In the corresponding Actions column, choose more > Stop Instance.

  8. Click OK.

Manually remove a managed instance from a scaling group

This section applies only to scaling groups of the ECS type. If you no longer want a scaling group to manage a managed instance, remove the managed instance from the scaling group. Manual removal is the only supported method, and the managed instance is not released after it is removed.

  6. Find the Managed Instance list.

  7. Use one of the following methods to remove one or more managed instances from the scaling group:

    • Single instance — Find the managed instance that you want to manage. In the corresponding Actions column, click Remove from Scaling Group.

    • Multiple instances — Select the managed instances that you want to manage. At the bottom of the managed instance list, click Remove from Scaling Group.

  8. Select or clear Modify Expected Number of Instances, which is selected by default, and then click OK.

    • If you select Modify Expected Number of Instances, the expected number of instances decreases by the corresponding number after the instances are removed from the scaling group.

    • If you do not select Modify Expected Number of Instances, the expected number of instances does not change after the instances are removed from the scaling group.
