Overview
Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console. On the Authority Domains tab of the Manage DNS page, you can view the states of DNS servers in the DNS Server Status column. The following table describes the states of DNS servers.
DNS server state | Description |
Running exception | This state indicates that Alibaba Cloud DNS cannot find the DNS settings of the domain name. The failure may be caused by the following reasons: 1. You have not completed real-name verification for the domain name. As a result, the domain name registry or registrar disables DNS resolution for the domain name. 2. You have not configured DNS servers for the domain name. 3. The query times out due to factors such as poor network conditions. |
Have not used AlibabaCloudDNS | This state indicates that the DNS servers of the domain name are not Alibaba Cloud DNS servers. |
Change DNS Server | The DNS servers provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS vary with editions. If you upgrade or downgrade the Alibaba Cloud DNS edition, the current DNS servers may be different from the DNS servers provided by the new edition of Alibaba Cloud DNS. |
Normal | This state indicates that the current DNS servers are provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS. |
Running exception
Situation 1: The domain name is a primary domain
In most cases, the failure is caused because you have not completed real-name verification for the domain name. As a result, the registry or registrar disables DNS resolution for the domain name. Alibaba Cloud DNS cannot resolve this issue. We recommend that you troubleshoot and resolve the issue in Domains.
1. Check the status of the domain name
You can use WHOIS to query the status of the domain name. If the domain name is in the clientHold or serverHold state, the domain name is locked. Domain name locking may be caused by the following reasons: 1. You have not completed real-name verification for the domain name. 2. The domain name violates anti-abuse policies.
Note: After the primary domain enters a normal state, if Running exception is still displayed in the DNS Server Status column, we recommend that you refresh the page 5 minutes later to check the DNS server status. This is because Alibaba Cloud DNS periodically checks the DNS server status and asynchronously displays the result. It takes several minutes to synchronize the DNS server status.
2. Complete real-name verification for the domain name
You can log on to the Domains console to check whether you have completed real-name verification for the domain name. If you have not completed real-name verification, the information for real-name verification is being reviewed, or real-name verification failed, DNS resolution is disabled for the domain name.
Note: After you complete real-name verification for the domain name, it may take two to three days until the domain name becomes unlocked and DNS resolution becomes available for the domain name.
Situation 2: The domain name is a subdomain
The Running exception state indicates that you have not configured DNS servers for the subdomain. You must configure two NS records for the subdomain on the DNS Settings page of the primary domain. Note: After the NS records are configured, if Running exception is still displayed in the DNS Server Status column, we recommend that you refresh the page 5 minutes later to check the DNS server status. This is because Alibaba Cloud DNS periodically checks the DNS server status and asynchronously displays the result. It takes several minutes to synchronize the DNS server status.
Have not used AlibabaCloudDNS
Situation 1: The domain name is a primary domain
The Have not used AlibabaCloudDNS state indicates that the current DNS servers are not provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS. To use DNS servers provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS, modify the DNS server information at the domain name registrar. For more information, see Smooth domain name migration.
Note: After the DNS server information is modified, if Have not used AlibabaCloudDNS is still displayed in the DNS Server Status column, we recommend that you refresh the page 5 minutes later to check the DNS server status. This is because Alibaba Cloud DNS periodically checks the DNS server status and asynchronously displays the result. It takes several minutes to synchronize the DNS server status.
Situation 2: The domain name is a subdomain
The Have not used AlibabaCloudDNS state indicates that you have not configured DNS servers for the subdomain. You must configure two NS records for the subdomain on the DNS Settings page of the primary domain. Note: After the NS records are configured, if Have not used AlibabaCloudDNS is still displayed in the DNS Server Status column, we recommend that you refresh the page 5 minutes later to check the DNS server status. This is because Alibaba Cloud DNS periodically checks the DNS server status and asynchronously displays the result. It takes several minutes to synchronize the DNS server status.
Change DNS Server
Situation 1: The domain name is a primary domain
The Change DNS Server state indicates that the current DNS servers are not provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS. To prevent inconsistency of DNS settings, we recommend that you change the current DNS servers to DNS servers provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS at the domain name registrar.
The following table describes common scenarios in which the Change DNS Server state is displayed.
Edition change | Impact |
Upgrade from the free edition to a paid edition | DNS resolution is not affected. However, if you do not change the current DNS servers to the DNS servers provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS of the paid edition, you cannot use the paid features. |
Downgrade from a paid edition to the free edition | DNS resolution is affected. If you do not change the current DNS servers to the DNS servers provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS of the free edition after the paid edition expires, the DNS records generated by using the features of the paid edition will be deleted after seven days. |
Upgrade from a custom edition or the personal edition to the standard edition or the ultimate edition | DNS resolution is not affected. The features and DNS servers provided by Alibaba Cloud DNS vary with editions. This upgrade is smooth and does not affect DNS resolution. |
Situation 2: The domain name is a subdomain
The Change DNS Server state indicates that you have not configured DNS servers for the subdomain. You must configure two NS records for the subdomain on the DNS Settings page of the primary domain. Note: After the NS records are configured, if Change DNS Server is still displayed in the DNS Server Status column, we recommend that you refresh the page 5 minutes later to check the DNS server status. This is because Alibaba Cloud DNS periodically checks the DNS server status and asynchronously displays the result. It takes several minutes to synchronize the DNS server status.
Normal
If the Normal state is displayed, the DNS settings may not take effect. However, if the Running exception state is displayed, the DNS settings must not take effect. For more information, see Check whether the DNS records take effect.
