ApsaraVideo for VOD is an all-in-one on-demand audio and video streaming solution. It automatically transcodes the collected, edited, and uploaded audio and video files based on the transcoding settings. It also allows you to edit mezzanine files online, manage media resources, and deliver media content to customers for playback with low latency.features

Media asset upload

ApsaraVideo for VOD supports multi-end upload, concurrent upload, and resumable upload to meet the upload requirements in various scenarios. It allows you to directly upload short videos by using SDKs and record live streams to on-demand videos.

  • Upload methods

    ApsaraVideo for VOD provides the upload SDK that supports upload from web browsers (JavaScript), mobile terminals (Android and iOS), and servers (Java). You can also upload media files in the console or by using the API, and record live videos to on-demand videos.

Short video SDK

You can use the short video SDK to record, import, and edit short videos. The short video SDK supports multiple definitions, real-time beautification and filter, camera switching, flashlight switching, and face stickers by using the facial recognition SDK. It also provides advanced editing features such as video cropping by frame and duration, multi-video merging, and addition of filter, animation, music, MV, subtitle, and doodle. The SDK provides product-level open-source UIs, so that you can easily customize UIs as needed. It also provides easy-to-use, stable, and unified advanced operations for video recording, upload, cropping, and editing, facilitating personalized secondary development.

Media processing

ApsaraVideo for VOD allows you to convert an audio or video file to one or more formats to meet different network bandwidth, device, and business requirements.

  • Audio and video transcoding

    • ApsaraVideo for VOD supports all mainstream formats, various definitions and bitrates, configurable transcoding template groups, and custom watermarks.
    • It supports the H.264 and H.265 formats, 4K transcoding, and conversion from video files to GIF files.
    • By using Narrowband HDTM, you can adjust the video bitrate, increase the compression rate, and reduce the file size without compromising the video quality, to eliminate video stalling during playback and save storage and traffic costs.
  • Video snapshots

Feature Description
Snapshot The JPG file that is captured from a video file at a specific time point.
Sprite snapshot The image that is generated by capturing a series of images. You can send a request to obtain the information about multiple images at one time. This greatly reduces the number of image requests and improves client performance.
  • Video encryption
Feature Description
Private encryption Video files are converted to an encrypted HLS format that can be decrypted and played by ApsaraVideo Player, ensuring video security on mobile devices and Flash. This method provides high-level security and is appropriate for scenarios such as online education and subscription-based viewings.
Standard encryption Video content is encrypted based on the HLS AES-128 encryption standard and can be played by any player that supports HLS streams, ensuring video security on mobile devices. This method provides high-level security and is compatible with many devices.

Media asset storage and management

ApsaraVideo for VOD provides a media management solution that integrates media asset upload, storage, and management. It allows you to easily and flexibly manage a large number of audio and video assets.

  • Media asset storage

    ApsaraVideo for VOD automatically stores multiple copies of data, provides remote disaster recovery and resource isolation, and ensures 99.999999999% data reliability. It allows you to store and access your data in any application anytime and anywhere.

  • Media asset management

    You can perform the following operations to manage your media assets in the console or by using the API:

    • Manage videos in a list and preview videos online.
    • Edit information about media assets, such as titles, description, and thumbnails, and manage custom media asset metadata.
    • Create categories and tags for media assets.
    • Perform fuzzy search by media name and accurate search by media asset ID.
    • Manage files and view video URLs.
    • Export video information, such as the video ID, name, and URL, to a CSV file.

Cropping and merging Allows you to crop an audio or video file into multiple parts or merge multiple video files into a video file.
Audio mixing Allows you to add a piece of background music to the video or dub the video with an audio resource.

Content moderation

  • Manual review

    ApsaraVideo for VOD provides a visual review page on which you can review videos after transcoding and before publishing them. You can block improper videos in advance or in time to avoid or reduce the adverse effects caused by these videos when they are published.

  • Automated review

    ApsaraVideo for VOD supports automated review and manual review that help you accurately identify illegal content of audio, text, and images in videos, thumbnails, titles, and comments. This feature is applicable to various scenarios such as short video platforms and the media industry.

CDN-based content delivery acceleration

As the cloud service provider with the largest number of CDN nodes in China, Alibaba Cloud uses its advanced distributed system architecture and more than 1,500 CDN nodes to ensure that you can watch videos smoothly anytime and anywhere.

  • Hotlinking protection

    Based on the HTTP referrer mechanism, the hotlinking protection feature uses the referer to track and identify the source. You can configure a referer blacklist or whitelist to identify and filter visitors and to limit access to managed and delivered video resources.

  • URL signing

    URL signing uses Alibaba Cloud’s CDN nodes together with your resource sites to provide more secure and reliable hotlinking protection for resources at the origin. It protects the content and resources that are uploaded to ApsaraVideo for VOD from illegal download and misuse. Hotlinking protection by using the referer blacklist or whitelist solves some problems. However, the referer content may be forged, so hotlinking protection cannot completely protect site resources. Therefore, URL signing protects the resources at your origin more effectively.

  • Playback authentication

    Playback authentication is a secondary authentication mechanism of ApsaraVideo for VOD based on Alibaba Cloud AccessKey authentication. It further prevents hotlinking.

Secure player

The ApsaraVideo Player SDK is an important part of ApsaraVideo. This service has integrated cloud video services. In addition to the basic playback features of ApsaraVideo for VOD and ApsaraVideo Live, the ApsaraVideo Player SDK also supports features such as encrypted playback, secure download, definition switching, and live Q&A. This player provides you with simple, fast, secure, and stable video playback services.

Statistics collection and analysis

  • Resource usage

    This feature allows you to query multi-dimensional statistics on traffic bandwidth, buckets, and transcoding duration from the past 30 days to understand the service usage. You can also download detailed data.

  • Operation statistics

    Based on the terminal data collection capabilities of ApsaraVideo Player, this feature provides statistics on playback behavior data and popular resources that are more applicable to operation scenarios. For example, the statistics on the playback UV and VV, users’ average viewing time, and popular videos are collected.
