You can use tags to identify products, devices, or device groups as needed. This helps you flexibly manage them.

Background information

Internet of Things (IoT) often involves the management of a huge number of products and devices. How to differentiate between various products and devices and how to achieve centralized management become a challenge. Alibaba Cloud IoT Platform provides tags to address this issue. You can attach different tags to different products, devices, or device groups by classification and use the tags to achieve centralized management.

The format of tags for products, devices, and device groups is Key:Value.

Note Each product, device, or device group can have up to 100 tags.

Product tag

A product tag usually describes the information that is common to all devices of a product, such as the manufacturer, organization, physical size, and operating system of the product. Before you add a product tag, you must create a product.

To add a product tag in the IoT Platform console, perform the following steps:

  1. Log on to the IoT Platform console.
  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Devices > Products.
  3. On the Products page, find the product to which you want to add a tag and click View in the Actions column.
  4. On the Product Details page, click Edit next to Tag Information.
    Product tag
  5. In the Edit Tag dialog box, set the Tag key and Tag value parameters. Then, click OK.
    Parameter Description
Tag key The key of the tag. The key must be 1 to 30 characters in length, and can contain letters, digits, and periods (.).
Tag value The value of the tag. The value must be 1 to 128 characters in length, and can contain Chinese characters, letters, digits, Japanese characters, underscores (_), hyphens (-), colons (:), and periods (.). Each Chinese character or Japanese character uses two characters.

Device tag

You can add unique tags to devices based on device features. This allows you to manage your devices with ease. For example, for the smarter meter of Room 201, you can add the tag: room:201.

Information in device tags is forwarded together with the devices within the system. In addition, based on the data forwarding feature of the rules engine, IoT Platform can add a device tag to the body of a message that is sent by the device. Then, IoT Platform sends the message to other Alibaba Cloud services.

To add a device tag in the IoT Platform console, perform the following steps:

  1. Log on to the IoT Platform console.
  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Devices > Devices.
  3. On the Devices page, find the device to which you want to add a tag and click View in the Actions column. The Device Details page appears.
  4. Click Edit next to Tag Information.
    Device tag
  5. In the Edit Tag dialog box, set the Tag key and Tag value parameters. Then, click OK.
    Parameter Description
Tag key The key of the tag. The key must be 1 to 30 characters in length, and can contain letters, digits, underscores (_), hyphens (-), number signs (#), at signs (@), percent signs (%), ampersands (&), asterisks (*), and periods (.).
Tag value The value of the tag. The value must be 1 to 128 characters in length, and can contain Chinese characters, letters, digits, Japanese characters, underscores (_), hyphens (-), number signs (#), at signs (@), percent signs (%), ampersands (&), colons (:), and periods (.). Each Chinese character or Japanese character uses two characters.

Group tag

Device groups are used to manage devices across products. A group tag usually describes the information that is common to all devices and subgroups of a device group, such as the region and space where the devices of the group reside. Before you add a group tag, you must create a device group.

To add a group tag in the IoT Platform console, perform the following steps:

  1. Log on to the IoT Platform console.
  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Devices > Groups.
  3. On the Groups page, find the device group to which you want to add a tag and click View in the Actions column.
  4. On the Group Details page, click Edit next to Tag Information.
    Group tag

Manage multiple tags at a time

You can create, edit, or delete a tag in the IoT Platform console. You can also use the API operations that are provided by IoT Platform to manage multiple tags at a time. In addition, IoT Platform also provides API operations for you to query products, devices, and device groups based on tags. For more information, see List of operations by function.
