Use DBS to perform remote backups

Last Updated: Dec 07, 2018

DBS provides remote backup capability to support remote disaster recovery.

Scenarios

  1. Remote backup of non-Alibaba Cloud databases deployed on ECS
  2. Remote backup of RDS instances
  3. Remote backup of databases deployed in on-premise data centers
  4. Remote backup of databases accessible from public networks, including databases deployed on third-party clouds such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Tencent Cloud.

How to ensure security during the backup process

Alibaba Cloud does not support cross-region communication between private networks. To ensure the security of data when performing remote backups, you can use the following methods:

  1. Public IP address of your database + IP whitelist (Recommended)
  2. Public IP address of your database + SSL
  3. Alibaba Cloud leased line

How to reduce backup costs

Remote backups involve data transfer fees and DBS configuration fees. For more information, see Billing details.

Procedure

  1. Go to the DBS feature page to activate DBS. During the beta testing period, you can click Apply to Use to apply for a free trial.

  2. Go to the DBS purchase page to create a backup plan. You may also click Free Trial on the DBS feature page or click create backup plan in the DBS console to create a backup plan.

  3. Select regions based on your needs. The relationship between the regions of the DBS instance, OSS bucket, and source database decides whether the backups are stored locally or in remote locations.

Remote backup

  1. The DBS instance and source database are deployed in different regions.

  2. The DBS instance and OSS bucket are deployed in the same region.

Local backup

  1. The DBS instance and source database are deployed in the same region.

  2. The DBS instance and OSS bucket are deployed in the same region.

  1. Go to the DBS console, select your backup plan from the Backup Plans list, and click set backup plan to go to the configuration page.

  2. Specify the configuration of the source database. You need to select your database type and enter database account information.

  3. Specify the OSS bucket based on your needs. Make sure the OSS bucket is deployed in the same region as the backup plan.
