With the constant decrease in domain names, good domain names become more and more expensive. Once a domain name has been stolen, it is difficult or impossible to get it back. Therefore, it is essential to protect domain names from being stolen. As a domain name registrant, you can take many anti-theft measures in advance.

Enable domain security lock at the domain name registry

Domain security lock is a service operated by the domain name registry at the root server level to protect domain names from being maliciously transferred, tampered with, or deleted. It is the highest level of domain name protection by far. By far, this service supports domain names with the following suffixes: .com, .cn, .net, .cc, .tv, .name, .中国, and .gov.cn. After domain security lock is enabled for a domain name, the domain name will be set to the following locked statuses:

  • serverDeleteProhibited, indicating that deletion is prohibited
  • serverTransferProhibited, indicating that transfer is prohibited
  • serverUpdateProhibited, indicating that update is prohibited

To change the status and information of the domain name, you must remove the lock status.

Enable domain transfer-out prohibition

To obtain the transfer key of a domain name, you must disable this service first.

Enable domain update prohibition lock

Enabling domain update prohibition lock can prevent your domain registration information, including the domain name contact, phone number, address, fax, and email, and Domain Name System (DNS) server from being maliciously tampered with. Provide authentic owner information

When a dispute arises over the ownership of a domain name, the domain name authority determines the ownership based on the owner information in the domain registration information. Therefore, you must provide the authentic and valid information of yourself or your enterprise for domain registration. In case your domain name is stolen, you can provide the corresponding certificate documents to recover the domain name.

If you are worried about being harassed by spams, you can enable the domain privacy protection service.

Update your email and phone number

Make sure that the Alibaba Cloud account, email address, and phone number related to your domain name are valid. Update the information accordingly if you change or deactivate your email address or phone number.

Make sure that the email address you offered is secure. A simple email password can be easily cracked, which may cause loss of the Alibaba Cloud account and domain name. Therefore, we recommend that you set a complex email password that contains letters in uppercase and lowercase, symbols, and numbers to increase the password security.
