This topic provides answers to some frequently asked questions about the billing of E-MapReduce (EMR) clusters.

Do EMR clusters support auto-renewal?

Yes, EMR clusters support auto-renewal. The EMR service and Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances can be automatically renewed. For more information, see Renewal policy.

How do I view the expiration time of an EMR cluster and the expiration time of the ECS instances in the cluster?

You can view the expiration time of an EMR cluster in the EMR console. On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired cluster and click the name of the cluster. In the Cluster Information section of the Basic Information tab, view the expiration time of the EMR cluster.

The expiration time of the EMR instance is the same as the expiration time of the EMR cluster. To view the expiration time of ECS instances, perform the following steps: On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired cluster, move the pointer over the more icon in the Actions column, and then select Renew. In the upper-right corner of the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal.

If an EMR cluster expires but the ECS instances in the cluster do not expire, am I charged for the ECS instances? What do I do if I am charged for the ECS instances?

If an EMR cluster expires but the ECS instances in the cluster do not expire, the cluster becomes unavailable and the nodes of the cluster continue to be billed.

In most cases, this issue occurs because the expiration time of the EMR instance is inconsistent with the expiration time of the ECS instances after you scale out the cluster. To resolve the issue, perform the following steps: On the EMR on ECS page, find the expired EMR cluster, move the pointer over the more icon in the Actions column, and then select Renew. In the upper-right corner of the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal. On the Renewal Management page, specify the same expiration time for the EMR instance and ECS instances. For more information, see Renewal policy.

If the EMR instance expires but the ECS instances do not expire, perform the following steps to renew the EMR instance at the earliest opportunity: On the EMR on ECS page, find the expired EMR cluster, move the pointer over the More icon in the Actions column, and then select Renew. In the upper-right corner of the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal and renew the EMR instance separately.

If auto-renewal is enabled for the ECS instances of an EMR cluster, perform the following steps to enable auto-renewal for the EMR instance: On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired EMR cluster, move the pointer over the More icon in the Actions column, and then select Auto-renewal. In the upper-right corner of the Auto-renewal page, click Custom Auto-renewal Rule and enable auto-renewal for the EMR instance.

Can I change the billing method of EMR clusters?

You can change the billing method of EMR clusters only from pay-as-you-go to subscription. For more information, see Switch from pay-as-you-go to subscription.

Am I charged for an EMR cluster if I confirm the order for the EMR cluster but do not complete the payment?

  • Pay-as-you-go clusters: After you submit a request to create a cluster, ECS fees are generated only if ECS instances are created. EMR fees are generated after the cluster is successfully created.
  • Subscription clusters: If you do not complete the payment, no fees are generated.

How am I charged for an EMR cluster?

EMR supports the subscription and pay-as-you-go billing methods. For EMR on ECS clusters, the fees for an EMR cluster consist of fees for the EMR service, ECS instances, and Internet traffic of the master node of the cluster. The fees for the EMR service vary based on the type of the ECS instances of an EMR cluster. For more information, see Billing Overview.

How do I enable auto-renewal for EMR clusters?

You can enable auto-renewal only for subscription EMR clusters. For more information, see Renewal policy.
