Anti-DDoS:Billing of the burstable clean bandwidth feature

Last Updated:Mar 28, 2024

This topic describes the billing of the burstable clean bandwidth feature that is provided by Anti-DDoS Proxy.

Overview

After you add services to your Anti-DDoS Proxy instance, the peak service traffic may exceed the clean bandwidth of the instance. In this case, random packet loss occurs during service traffic forwarding. If the peak service traffic remains higher than the clean bandwidth for a long period of time, rate limiting is triggered, and access to your services is affected. The following list describes the scenarios in which the peak service traffic exceeds the clean bandwidth and provides solutions for the scenarios:

  • The clean bandwidth of your instance cannot meet your business requirements. You can upgrade the instance to increase the clean bandwidth. For more information, see Upgrade an instance.

  • The clean bandwidth of your instance can meet your daily business requirements but cannot meet the requirements to handle traffic spikes. We recommend that you enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature.

The burstable clean bandwidth feature provides additional clean bandwidth for your instance. If your service traffic spikes and the traffic exceeds the clean bandwidth of the instance during peak hours, the burstable clean bandwidth feature can be used to prevent access to your service from being limited. After you enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature, you are charged for the burstable clean bandwidth that is used when the peak service traffic exceeds the clean bandwidth of your instance.

Important

If you want to perform proof of concept (POC) tests, we recommend that you do not enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature. If you enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature, you are charged for the feature on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Scenarios

We recommend that you enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature for your instance in the following scenarios:

  • Holiday promotions, such as Black Friday

  • Release of services, such as launch of a new gaming server or new product

  • Sharp increase in the number of access requests to websites, such as access requests to online course selection systems and government lottery systems within a specific period of time

Supported instances

  • Anti-DDoS Proxy (Chinese Mainland): Profession and Advanced mitigation plans

  • Anti-DDoS Proxy (Outside Chinese Mainland): Insurance, Unlimited, Chinese Mainland Acceleration (CMA), CMA 2.0, Secure Chinese Mainland Acceleration (Sec-CMA), and Sec-CMA (Basic) mitigation plans

Precautions

The maximum clean bandwidth is equal to the sum of the clean bandwidth and the burstable clean bandwidth. The following list describes the maximum clean bandwidth that is supported by each type of instance:

  • Anti-DDoS Proxy (Chinese Mainland) of the Profession and Advanced mitigation plans: 20 Gbit/s.

  • Anti-DDoS Proxy (Outside Chinese Mainland) of the Insurance and Unlimited mitigation plans: 5 Gbit/s. Anti-DDoS Proxy (Outside Chinese Mainland) of the CMA mitigation plan: 1 Gbit/s. Anti-DDoS Proxy (Outside Chinese Mainland) of the CMA 2.0 mitigation plan: 2 Gbit/s. Anti-DDoS Proxy (Outside Chinese Mainland) of the Sec-CMA and Sec-CMA (Basic) mitigation plans: 500 Mbit/s.

The burstable clean bandwidth cannot exceed nine times the clean bandwidth of an instance, and the sum of the clean bandwidth and the burstable clean bandwidth cannot exceed the maximum clean bandwidth that is supported by an instance. In the following examples, an Anti-DDoS Proxy (Chinese Mainland) instance of the Profession mitigation plan is used, and the instance supports a maximum clean bandwidth of 20 Gbit/s.

  • For example, if the clean bandwidth of the instance is 100 Mbit/s, the maximum clean bandwidth can be 900 Mbit/s. In this case, the instance can process service traffic of up to 1 Gbit/s.

  • For example, the clean bandwidth of the instance is 3 Gbit/s, and the instance supports a maximum clean bandwidth of 20 Gbit/s. In this case, the burstable clean bandwidth can be up to 17 Gbit/s.

  • If the clean bandwidth of the instance is greater than 20 Gbit/s, you cannot enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature for the instance.

Metering methods

Important

The burstable clean bandwidth feature immediately takes effect after you enable it.

The burstable clean bandwidth feature uses the pay-as-you-go billing method. You can use the metering method of the daily 95th percentile bandwidth or the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth for the feature.

You can switch between the metering methods of the burstable clean bandwidth feature. The new metering method takes effect from 00:00 on the first day of the next month. You can change the metering method up to three times each calendar month. The most recent metering method that you select takes effect in the next month.

Fee settlement methods

You are charged for the usage on a calendar day.

Important

If you enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature for the first time on Day T in a calendar month and you select the daily 95th percentile metering method, you are not charged for the usage of the burstable clean bandwidth on Day T. On Day T+1, you are charged for the usage of the burstable clean bandwidth. On Day T+2, the bill for the burstable clean bandwidth that is used on Day T+1 is generated.

You are charged for the usage on a calendar month.

How you are charged

If the 95th percentile bandwidth of a calendar day is greater than the clean bandwidth of your instance, the burstable clean bandwidth feature is used.

How to calculate the daily 95th percentile bandwidth: Collect the valid bandwidth values of your instance every 5 minutes in a calendar day. In a calendar day, 288 bandwidth values are collected. Exclude the bandwidth values that are collected during DDoS attacks. Then, sort the remaining bandwidth values in descending order and exclude the top 5 bandwidth values. The largest bandwidth value among the remaining bandwidth values is used as the daily 95th percentile bandwidth.

If the 95th percentile bandwidth of a calendar month is greater than the clean bandwidth of your instance, the burstable clean bandwidth feature is used.

The following list describes how to calculate the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth:

  1. Obtain the daily peak bandwidth: Collect the valid bandwidth values of your instance every 5 minutes in a calendar day. In a calendar day, 288 bandwidth values can be collected. Exclude the bandwidth values that are collected during DDoS attacks. The largest bandwidth value among the remaining bandwidth values is used as the daily peak bandwidth.

  2. Calculate the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth: Sort the collected daily peak bandwidth values in a calendar month in descending order and calculate the average value of the top 5 daily peak bandwidth values. The average value is used as the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth.

Formulas that are used to calculate fees

Fee of the burstable clean bandwidth = Usage of the burstable clean bandwidth (Mbit/s) × Unit price when the daily 95th percentile metering method is used (unit: USD per Mbit/s per day).

Method to calculate the usage of the burstable clean bandwidth

Usage of the burstable clean bandwidth: Daily 95th percentile bandwidth or Maximum clean bandwidth, whichever is smaller - Clean bandwidth.

Important

If the daily 95th percentile bandwidth exceeds the maximum clean bandwidth that is supported by the instance, rate limiting may be triggered. We recommend that you increase the burstable clean bandwidth or upgrade the instance to increase the clean bandwidth at the earliest opportunity. For more information, see Configure the burstable clean bandwidth feature and Upgrade an instance.

Fee of the burstable clean bandwidth = Usage of the burstable clean bandwidth (Mbit/s) × Effective factor × Unit price when the monthly 95th percentile metering method is used (unit: USD per Mbit/s per month).

Methods to calculate the usage of the burstable clean bandwidth and effective factor

  • Usage of the burstable clean bandwidth

Monthly 95th percentile bandwidth or Maximum clean bandwidth, whichever is smaller - Clean bandwidth.

    • Maximum clean bandwidth: the maximum clean bandwidth that is supported by an instance for each day on which the top 5 daily peak bandwidth values are collected.

    • Clean bandwidth: the clean bandwidth of the instance on the last day when the burstable clean bandwidth feature is enabled in a calendar month.

      Important
      • If the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth exceeds the maximum clean bandwidth that is supported by the instance, rate limiting may be triggered. We recommend that you increase the burstable clean bandwidth or upgrade the instance to increase the clean bandwidth at the earliest opportunity. For more information, see Configure the burstable clean bandwidth feature and Upgrade an instance.

      • If your service traffic does not exceed the burstable clean bandwidth of the instance for the current calendar month, rate limiting is not triggered, and packet loss does not occur.

  • Effective factor = Number of valid days in a calendar month/Total number of days in the calendar month

    Important

If you enable the burstable clean bandwidth feature for the first time on Day T in a calendar month and you select the monthly 95th percentile metering method, Day T is not included in the valid days of the feature.

For example, you enabled the burstable clean bandwidth feature on July 15, 2023 and did not disable the feature in July. The number of valid days in the calendar month is 16 from July 16, 2023 to July 31, 2023. The total number of days in July 2023 is 31. The effective factor of the month is 0.51612903. This value is calculated based on the following formula: 16/31.

Limits

  • The metering method of the daily 95th percentile bandwidth can be disabled only once within a calendar month.

  • You cannot change the metering method on the last day of a calendar month.

  • The metering method of the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth can be disabled only once in a calendar month.

  • You cannot change the metering method on the last day of a calendar month.

Billing example

You purchased an Anti-DDoS Proxy (Chinese Mainland) instance of the Profession mitigation plan on January 1, 2023. The clean bandwidth of the instance is 200 Mbit/s, the burstable clean bandwidth feature is enabled, the monthly 95th percentile metering method is used, and the burstable clean bandwidth is 300 Mbit/s. You used the same configurations on February 01.

From February 3, 2023 to February 6, 2023, you changed the clean bandwidth and the burstable clean bandwidth.

On February 8, 2023, you disabled the burstable clean bandwidth feature.

On February 27, 2023, you enabled the burstable clean bandwidth feature and set the burstable clean bandwidth to 100 Mbit/s.

The following figure shows the daily clean bandwidth, the total clean bandwidth, and the daily peak bandwidth. The figure displays only the data that is collected when the burstable clean bandwidth feature is enabled. The data that is collected when the burstable clean bandwidth feature is disabled is not displayed. 弹性业务带宽_cn

Fee of the burstable clean bandwidth = Usage of the burstable clean bandwidth (Mbit/s) × Effective factor × Unit price when the monthly 95th percentile metering method is used (unit: USD per Mbit/s per month)

  1. Calculate the usage of the burstable clean bandwidth.

Use the smaller value between the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth and the burstable clean bandwidth to minus the clean bandwidth of the instance on the last day when the burstable clean bandwidth feature is enabled in a calendar month.

    1. Calculate the monthly 95th percentile bandwidth. In this example, the average value of the top 5 daily peak bandwidth values is 600 Mbit/s. This value is calculated based on the following formula: (1,000 Mbit/s + 500 Mbit/s + 600 Mbit/s + 500 Mbit/s + 400 Mbit/s)/5 = 600 Mbit/s.

    2. Obtain the maximum clean bandwidth that is supported by the instance for each day on which the top 5 daily peak bandwidth values are collected. The value is 500 Mbit/s.

    3. Calculate the usage of the burstable clean bandwidth. The usage of the burstable clean bandwidth is 400 Mbit/s. This value is calculated based on the following formula: 500 Mbit/s - 100 Mbit/s (the clean bandwidth on the last day when the burstable clean bandwidth feature is enabled in the calendar month) = 400 Mbit/s.

  2. Calculate the effective factor.

The effective factor is 10. This value is calculated based on the following formula: 10 (the number of days when the burstable clean bandwidth feature is enabled)/28 (the total number of days in the current month) = 0.35714285.

  3. View the unit price when the monthly 95th percentile metering method is used.

When the monthly 95th percentile metering method is used for an Anti-DDoS Proxy (Chinese Mainland) instance, the unit price is USD 15 per Mbit/s per month. For more information, see Pricing of the burstable clean bandwidth feature.

Therefore, your fee of the burstable clean bandwidth is USD 2,142.8571. This value is calculated based on the following formula: 400 Mbit/s × 0.35714285 × USD 15 per Mbit/s per month = USD 2,142.8571.
