Intelligent DNS resolution

Last Updated: Sep 17, 2020

Overview

In a traditional DNS resolution, the DNS server randomly selects one of the IP addresses and returns the IP address to the website visitor regardless of the source of the visitor. In an intelligent DNS resolution, the DNS server returns an IP address based on the source of the visitor. The visitor can obtain the user-specified IP address when visiting the website. Intelligent DNS resolution reduces latency and improves the website access speed.

1. Example of traditional DNS resolution

For example, the domain name www.dns-example.com is hosted by three DNS servers. The IP addresses of these DNS servers are provided by China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom. You can configure DNS resolution as follows:

  • Point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Unicom: 1.1.1.1
  • Point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Mobile: 2.2.2.2
  • Point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Telecom: 3.3.3.3

Effect of the configurations:

The three addresses 1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.2, and 3.3.3.3 are all returned to the visitor’s local DNS server. The local DNS server returns one of the IP addresses to the visitor randomly or based on preset priority. Traditional DNS resolution may cause cross-network access.

2. Example of intelligent DNS resolution

For example, the domain name www.dns-example.com is hosted by three DNS servers. The IP addresses of these DNS servers are provided by China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom. You can configure DNS resolution as follows:

  • Set ISP Line to Default and point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Unicom: 1.1.1.1
  • Set ISP Line to China Mobile and point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Mobile: 2.2.2.2
  • Set ISP Line to China Telecom and point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Telecom: 3.3.3.3

Effect of the configurations:

Alibaba Cloud DNS returns results based on the source of the visitor. If the ISP of the visitor is China Mobile, Alibaba Cloud DNS returns 2.2.2.2. If the ISP of the visitor is China Telecom, Alibaba Cloud DNS returns 3.3.3.3. If the visitor is from other sources, Alibaba Cloud DNS returns 1.1.1.1.

Procedure

1 . Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console.

2 . In the left-side navigation pane, click Manage DNS. On the Domains tab, click a domain name to open the DNS Settings page.

Example:

Your DNS servers are hosted by China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile. When you add a DNS record for your domain name, you can configure the ISP line as follows:

  • Set ISP Line to Default and point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Telecom: 10.10.10.10
  • Set ISP Line to China Unicom and point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Unicom: 1.1.1.1
  • Set ISP Line to China Mobile and point the domain name to the IP address provided by China Mobile: 2.2.2.2

Effect of the configurations:

Alibaba Cloud DNS returns results based on the source of the visitor.

  • If the ISP of the visitor is China Unicom, Alibaba Cloud DNS returns 1.1.1.1.
  • If the ISP of the visitor is China Mobile, Alibaba Cloud DNS returns 2.2.2.2.
  • If the ISP of the visitor is neither China Unicom nor China Mobile, Alibaba Cloud DNS returns 10.10.10.10.

By configuring the ISP line, you can ensure that Alibaba Cloud DNS returns specified IP addresses based on different visitor sources.
