FAQ

How do I switch the traffic mirror source address for Debian 9, 10, or 11 after its EOL?

Debian 9 reached its end of life (EOL) on June 30, 2022. Debian 10 will reach its EOL on June 30, 2024, and Debian 11 will reach its EOL on August 31, 2024. The standard software sources for EOL versions are removed from official and third-party mirror sites. Alibaba Cloud provides an archived traffic mirror source (debian-archive). To access these archived versions, you must update the source configuration in your Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance.

  • For instances in a virtual private cloud (VPC), use http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian.

  • For instances in the classic network, use http://mirrors.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian.

Important

The following steps describe the operations and configurations for an ECS instance. If your server is not an ECS instance, make sure that it can access the public network. Replace the source address http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com with http://mirrors.aliyun.com.

  1. Log on to the ECS instance that runs Debian 9, 10, or 11.

  2. Run the following command to edit the sources.list file.

    sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list
  3. Press the i key to enter edit mode, and then modify the content to switch the source.

    • Debian 9

deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian stretch main contrib non-free
      deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib non-free
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian stretch main contrib non-free
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib non-free
    • Debian 10

deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian/ buster main non-free contrib
      deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-security buster/updates main
      deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian/ buster-updates main non-free contrib
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian/ buster main non-free contrib
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-security buster/updates main
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian/ buster-updates main non-free contrib
    • Debian 11

      deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian bullseye main
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian bullseye main
      deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-security bullseye-security main
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-security bullseye-security main
      deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian bullseye-updates main
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian bullseye-updates main
      deb http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian bullseye-backports main
      deb-src http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/debian-archive/debian bullseye-backports main
  4. After you edit the file, press the Esc key, and then enter :wq to save and exit the file.

  5. Run the following command to update the source cache.

    sudo apt update

After the source is switched, you can use the sudo apt install command to install required packages.

How do I retain the source configuration when creating a custom image from a Debian 9, 10, or 11 ECS instance?

When you use a custom image to create a new ECS instance, cloud-init automatically initializes the source configuration at startup. To retain the updated source configuration in a new custom image, you must modify the cloud-init configuration file /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg on the original instance before you create the image.

  1. Run the following command to edit the /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg file.

    sudo vim /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg
  2. Press i to enter edit mode, and then use # to comment out the - source-address module under cloud_init_modules:.

After you comment out the line, the configuration information in the file is as follows:cloudinit

  3. After you edit the file, press the Esc key, and then enter :wq to save and exit the file.
