Alibaba Cloud DNS:Global disaster recovery in multicloud scenarios

Last Updated:Dec 03, 2025

Use case

Global disaster recovery for multicloud, multi-region, and multi-data center access scenarios.

Application solutions

In multicloud access scenarios, you can build a disaster recovery architecture solution through GTM. By implementing global disaster recovery with GTM, users from different regions can access the nearest entry point. If any data center fails, access traffic can be switched to a functioning data center, ensuring business continuity.多云场景

Expected results

  • Traffic from users in mainland China is routed to on-premises IDC

  • Traffic from users in Hong Kong (China) is routed to Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong (China)

  • Traffic from users outside China is routed to Huawei Cloud Singapore

  • In case of IDC failure, traffic is routed to Alibaba Cloud

  • In case of Huawei Cloud failure, traffic is routed to Alibaba Cloud

  • In case of Alibaba Cloud failure, traffic is routed to Huawei Cloud

Instructions

This section uses a multicloud scenario (on-premises IDC, Alibaba Cloud, and Huawei Cloud) with multi-center deployment as an example to demonstrate how to configure nearest access and disaster recovery switching.

  1. Prepare resources

  • Create a GTM instance, Global Traffic Manager.

  • Prepare resources: IDC Beijing (192.0.2.0), Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong (China) (192.0.2.1), and Huawei Cloud Singapore (192.0.2.2).

  1. Access Alibaba Cloud DNS - Global Traffic Manager. In the Global Traffic Manager instance list, find the destination instance and click the Configuration button in the Actions column.

  2. On the Basic Settings tab, you can add configurations according to your business requirements. It is recommended to set the global TTL to 1 minute (or you can specify a value based on your needs).

  3. IPAM pool configuration: Create three address pools for the three data centers and enable health checks

    健康检查

  4. Access policy: Create 3 access policies

  • For DNS resolution source, select Global. For primary address pool collection, select the "IDC Beijing" address pool. For backup address pool collection, select the "Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong (China)" address pool. This configuration enables users in mainland China to access the Beijing IDC data center. If the IDC fails, traffic will be switched to Alibaba Cloud.

  • For DNS resolution source, select Asia - Hong Kong (China). For primary address pool collection, select the "Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong (China)" address pool. For backup address pool collection, select the "Huawei Cloud Singapore" address pool. This configuration enables users in Hong Kong (China) to access the Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong data center. If Alibaba Cloud fails, traffic will be switched to Huawei Cloud.

  • For DNS resolution source, select Outside China. For address pool collection, select the "Huawei Cloud Singapore" address pool. For backup address pool collection, select the "Alibaba Cloud Hong Kong (China)" address pool. This configuration enables users outside China to access the Huawei Cloud data center. If Huawei Cloud fails, traffic will be switched to Alibaba Cloud.访问策略

  1. Online traffic access

    1. Go to Alibaba Cloud DNS - Hosted Public Zone, and click Settings for the target domain name.

    2. Click the Add Record button to add a CNAME record, with the record value being the GTM CNAME access domain. After completing the resolution record addition, the application service is officially connected to Global Traffic Manager.
