Billing model and pricing

OpenSearch charges you based on application instances. The billing items of application instances include instance leasing, document updates, search requests, and reindexing. Instance leasing and search requests are billed by using tiered pricing.

A storage capacity of 0.2 GB is free of charge for each application instance. If you create an application instance with a storage capacity of 0.2 GB or less, up to 5 queries per second (QPS) are supported, and instance leasing and search requests are free of charge. However, document updates and reindexing are billed based on the actual usage. You can create up to five application instances with a free storage capacity in each region. A year after the application instances are created, they are suspended. If you want to continue to use the application instances, increase their storage capacity to a paid level.

Instance leasing (billing cycle: hour)

Fee on instance leasing per hour = Storage capacity (GB) × Unit price for leasing (CNY/GB/hour) The following table describes the unit prices for leasing.

Note: The total size of documents of tables in an application instance cannot exceed its storage capacity. The size of a document equals the size of its field values, excluding the size of its field names.

Document updates (billing cycle: hour)

Fee on document updates = Changed size of documents (GB) × Unit price for document updates (CNY/GB)

The unit price for document updates is CNY 1 per GB.

Note: The changed size of documents equals the size of added and updated field values in the documents, excluding the changed size of field names and the size of deleted field values.

Search requests (billing cycle: hour)

Fee on search requests per hour = Storage capacity (GB) × Maximum QPS × Unit price for search requests (CNY) The following table describes the unit prices for search requests.

Maximum QPS × Storage capacity (QPS × GB)

Reindexing (billing cycle: hour)

Fee on reindexing = Total size of documents (GB) × Times of reindexing × Unit price for reindexing (CNY/GB)

The unit price for each reindexing is CNY 0.5 per GB.

Note: The total size of documents equals the accumulated size of documents of tables in an application instance when the index of the application instance is about to be rebuilt. If data is imported to an application instance when the index of the application instance is being rebuilt, you are also charged for document updates. If you run a task to clear documents in an application instance or expired data, reindexing is triggered. Therefore, a clearing task is billed based on the pricing of reindexing.

Payment methods

1. You can pay for OpenSearch by using the balance or coupons in your Alibaba Cloud account.

2. If you want to use the balance in your Alibaba Cloud account, you must recharge your Alibaba Cloud account by using Alipay.

3. Alibaba Cloud issues coupons during promotions. You can follow the promotions on the official website of Alibaba Cloud or the official forum of OpenSearch.

4. The available coupons include general coupons and dedicated coupons for OpenSearch.

Deduction

1. The storage capacity of an application instance is measured in GB. The total size of documents of tables in an application instance cannot exceed its storage capacity.

2. Fees on a bill are rounded to two decimal places. You are billed based on the rounded fees.

3. Bill amount in the current billing cycle = Fee on instance leasing in the current billing cycle + Fee on document updates in the current billing cycle + Fee on search requests in the current billing cycle + Fee on reindexing in the current billing cycle

4. In most cases, OpenSearch generates your bill within 1 to 3 hours after a billing cycle ends. The specific time is subject to the billing time of OpenSearch. After a bill is generated, fees are automatically deducted from your Alibaba Cloud account.

5. If you change the storage capacity of an application instance, you are charged for the maximum storage capacity before and after the capacity change in the current billing cycle. In the next billing cycle, you are charged for the newly changed storage capacity.

6. Billing example:

Assume that you have an application instance with a document size of 48 GB and a storage capacity of 48 GB. If 5% of total documents is updated, the index is rebuilt once, and the maximum QPS is 100 in the billing cycle from 10:00 to 11:00, the fees are calculated by using the following formulas:

  • Fee on instance leasing = Storage capacity (GB) × Unit price for leasing = (48 - 12) × 0.105 + (12 - 0.2) × 0.14 + 0.2 × 0 = CNY 5.432

  • Fee on document updates = Total document size (GB) × Percentage of updated documents × Unit price for document updates = 48 × 5% × 1 = CNY 2.4

  • Fee on search requests = Storage capacity (GB) × Maximum QPS × Unit price for search requests = [(48 × 100) - 1,000] × 0.0008 + (1,000 - 100) × 0.0009 + (100 - 1) × 0.0013 + 1 × 0 = CNY 3.979

  • Fee on reindexing = Total document size (GB) × Times of reindexing × Unit price for each reindexing = 48 × 1 × 0.5 = CNY 24

Total bill amount generated for the application instance in the billing cycle from 10:00 to 11:00 = Fee on instance leasing + Fee on document updates + Fee on search requests + Fee on reindexing = 5.432 + 2.4 + 3.979 + 24 = CNY 35.811

Overdue payments

1. Alerting of overdue payments: After a bill is settled on the hour, if the available balance in your Alibaba Cloud account in the next billing cycle is less than the bill amount that is generated in the last billing cycle, OpenSearch notifies you by SMS and email.

2. Overdue state: If the available balance in your Alibaba Cloud account is less than the bill amount that is generated in the last billing cycle, your application instances are in the overdue state. OpenSearch notifies you by SMS and email.

3. Alerting of freezing application instances: Within 24 hours after your account is overdue, you can still use OpenSearch, and OpenSearch reminds you to add funds to your account by SMS and email.

4. Freezing of application instances: After your account is overdue for more than 24 hours, all your application instances are frozen. In this case, you can still check or delete your application instances. However, you cannot suspend your application instances, upload files, run search tests, or reindex. OpenSearch notifies you by SMS and email.

5. If your account is overdue for more than 30 days, OpenSearch considers that you no longer use OpenSearch, and clears your data. The cleared data cannot be recovered. OpenSearch notifies you by SMS and email one day before your data is cleared.
