Cloud Backup:Remove a protected instance

Last Updated:Mar 27, 2025

This topic describes how to remove an instance from a protection group. If you no longer require disaster recovery, perform the following steps to remove the protected instances.

Note

After you remove a protected instance, the Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances and disks at the production site are not deleted.

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Disaster Recovery > ECS Disaster Recovery.

  3. If you are not using EBS Async Replication, click Switch to EBS Async Replication.image

  4. On the Site Pairs page, click the disaster recovery site pair and select Protection Group.

    • If the protection group is in the Replicating Full Data or Replicating Incremental Data state, click Disable Replication and wait until the state of the protection group changes to Initializing.

      • If the protection group is in the Initializing or Failback Completed state, click Manage Protected Instance in the Actions column of the protection group. On the Protected Instances page, find the protected instance that you want to remove and click Remove Protected Instance in the Actions column. Cloud Backup automatically deletes the ECS instance and disks from the disaster recovery site.

      • If the protection group is in the Failover Completed or Failover Confirmed state, click Manage Protected Instance in the Actions column of the protection group.

        Note

If you want to delete ECS instances and disks from the disaster recovery site in the future, record the protected instance IDs on the Protected Instances page.

On the Protected Instances page, find the protected instance that you want to remove and click Remove Protected Instance in the Actions column. In this case, business is running on the ECS instances at the disaster recovery site. Therefore, Cloud Backup does not automatically delete the ECS instances and disks from the disaster recovery site.

        1. On the Instance page of the ECS console, switch to the region where the disaster recovery site resides, and find the ECS instance based on tags CreatedBy=DR and DrProtectionId=Protected Instance ID.
