Hologres:Cross-region backup and restoration

Last Updated:Jan 06, 2026

Hologres provides cross-region backup (or offsite backup) and recovery, which automatically replicates snapshots from the source region to a destination region. Use this feature for regulatory compliance or disaster recovery. This topic explains how to enable cross-region backup and restore data from remote snapshots.

Important notes

  • Cross-region backup depends on the local backup feature, available only in Hologres V1.3 and later.

    Note

If your instance is running a version earlier than V1.3, upgrade your instance or get online support.

  • Releasing an instance also deletes its snapshots.

  • Cross-region backup is not supported if encryption at rest is enabled for the instance.

  • Once enabled, cross-region backup automatically replicates local backups to a destination region upon snapshot generation.

  • Hologres supports mutual cross-region backup between the following region pairs:

    • China (Hangzhou), China (Shanghai), China (Beijing), and China (Shenzhen).

    • Singapore and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur).

    • China (Hong Kong) and Singapore.

Billing

Cross-region backup incurs two fees, both billed in the destination region:

  • Storage fees for snapshots

  • Data transfer fees for cross-region snapshot replication

For more information, see Billing.

Feature introduction

Cross-region backup

Cross-region backup copies your instance data to a different region. In the event of a disaster in the source region, you can quickly create a new instance in another region using a backup snapshot.

Note

How it works: Cross-region backup replicates an existing local snapshot to a destination region. A local snapshot must be created first. For more information, see Local backup and recovery.

  • Benefits: Ensures data integrity against accidental deletion, data loss, or regional failures.

  • Backup type: Full snapshot.

  • Backup method: Manual and scheduled.

  • Backup speed: Dependent on the instance's data volume.

  • Supported instance types: General-purpose and virtual warehouse instances.

  • Billing: Incurs fees for snapshot storage and cross-region data transfer.

Cross-region recovery

Restore an instance in a different region using a remote snapshot.

  • Availability: Restoration is supported only between compatible region pairs. For more information, see Supported regions.

  • Restoration scope: Restore data to a specific point in time.

  • Restoration speed: Dependent on the snapshot size.

  • Billing: No additional fees for the recovery process itself. However, compute and storage charges apply to the newly created instance.

The flowchart depicts this process: Hologres takes a scheduled snapshot in Region A, copies it to Region B, and then restores a new instance from that snapshot in Region B.

Access the feature

  1. Log on to the Hologres console and click Instances in the left navigation menu.

  2. On the Instances page, click your instance ID to go to the Instance Details page.

Alternatively, click Manage in the Actions column to open the Instance Details page.
  3. In the sub-menu, select Backup and Disaster Recovery and click the Cross-region Backup tab.

Enable and configure cross-region backup

Follow these steps to enable cross-region backup.

  1. Click Edit next to Cross-region Backup Settings.

  2. In the dialog, turn on the Cross-region Snapshot Copy switch and configure the following parameters.

    Parameter

    Description

    Destination Region Settings

    Destination Region

Select a destination region and zone for snapshot storage. Hologres automatically copies generated snapshots to this destination zone.

    Note

Cross-region snapshot replication does not impact local snapshots in the source region; both sets are retained.

    Zone

    Snapshot Clearing Settings

    Retained Automatic Snapshots

Specify the number of scheduled snapshots to retain.

    Retained Manual Snapshots

Specify the number of manual snapshots to retain.

Compliance Commitment Regarding Cross-border Data Transfers

    Read and accept the terms.

  3. Click OK.

Manage snapshots

View remote snapshots

Note

Cross-region backup speed depends on instance data volume and network transfer speed, leading to variable wait times.

Go to the Cross-region Backup tab as described in Access the feature. In the Snapshots section, view existing remote snapshots.

Field

Description

Snapshot ID

The unique ID of the snapshot.

Backup Start and End Time

The start and end times of the cross-region backup task.

Snapshot Granularity

The granularity of the snapshot. Only instance-level full snapshots are currently supported.

Snapshot Region

The destination region.

Snapshot Size

The size of the snapshot.

Generation Method

  • Scheduled: The snapshot was generated by an automatic, scheduled task.

  • Manual: A manually created snapshot.

Backup Type

The backup type. Only instance-level full snapshots are currently supported.

Snapshot Type

The instance type corresponding to the snapshot, such as general-purpose or virtual warehouse instances. You can only use a snapshot to restore an instance of the same type.

Status

The status of the snapshot task.

Description

The notes for the backup snapshot.

You can also log on to the Hologres console and click Snapshots in the left navigation menu, and view all snapshots in the current region, including remote snapshots.

Disable cross-region backup

If you no longer need cross-region backup, follow the steps in Enable and configure cross-region backup. In the Cross-region Snapshot Copy Settings dialog box, turn off the Cross-region Snapshot Copy switch.

Important
  • Disabling this feature stops snapshot generation and cross-region replication, eliminating network traffic fees. However, you must manually delete existing snapshots.

  • Releasing an instance will also delete all its local and remote snapshots.

Restore data

  1. Log on to the Hologres console and click Snapshots in the left navigation menu.

  2. Click Restore Instance.

  3. On the Clone Instance page, select the Instance ID (defaults to the original instance ID), Specifications, Snapshot ID. You can select a snapshot based on its creation time. Configure other fields, read the terms of service, and click Buy Now.

After your payment is complete, a new instances is created from the selected snapshot.
