Edge Security Acceleration:Cache reserve

Last Updated:May 27, 2026

Cache reserve reduces origin traffic by consolidating origin requests through a top-level cache POP. ESA routes requests through this POP, which provides persistent storage to prevent less popular files from being evicted by frequently accessed content.

How it works

Cache reserve targets low cache hit ratio scenarios (cold traffic). For hot traffic, configure a cache rule to bypass cache reserve and reduce storage costs.

Prerequisites

  • Contact our sales team or contact us to purchase a cache reserve instance for your preferred region and storage capacity.

  • Set the tiered cache mode to All Cache Tiers. Other modes work but yield lower hit ratios and higher storage usage.

Instance lifecycle

  1. Purchase an instance

Cache reserve is subscription-based. Contact our sales team or contact us to order an instance for your desired region and storage capacity. After purchase, ESA provisions the instance.

  2. Instance suspension

A cache reserve instance is suspended immediately when the subscription expires, payment is overdue, or you manually release it.

After suspension, resources are retained for 15 days before release.

  3. Change instance specifications

To change an instance's storage capacity, contact our sales team or contact us.

  4. Release an instance

After the 15-day retention period, the instance is released and all cached resources on cache reserve POPs are permanently deleted.

  5. Renew or disable auto-renewal

You can enable or disable auto-renewal at purchase time.

To change your auto-renewal setting, go to Billing Management - Resource Renewal.

  6. Unsubscribe from an instance

To unsubscribe from a cache reserve instance, go to Billing Management - Resource Refund.

Refunds are calculated based on actual usage duration.

Procedure

  1. In the ESA console, navigate to Websites. In the Website column, click the target website.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Caching > Cache Reserve.

  3. In the Cache Reserve section, click Configure.

  4. Turn on the Status switch.

  5. From the Instance list, select a cache reserve instance.

Select the instance closest to your origin server. For example, if your origin is in China (Hong Kong), select the China (Hong Kong) instance. If your required region is unavailable, contact our sales team or contact us to request a new instance.

    Note
    • Disabling cache reserve stops routing requests through cache reserve POPs. The change takes effect in about 3 to 5 minutes.

    • Each cache reserve instance supports up to 20 websites. Disabling cache reserve for a website removes its association with the instance.

  6. Click OK

Global features and rules

Global settings apply to all website requests. To apply cache reserve to specific requests only, use a rule-based configuration. The equivalent rule is cache reserve.
