Last Updated: Apr 15, 2021

This topic describes the billing strategy after the public preview period of Alibaba Cloud Public DNS Commercial Edition ends on April 15, 2021.

The public preview period of Public DNS Commercial Edition ends on April 15, 2021. After the public preview period ends, you are charged if you use the service in the Alibaba Cloud Management console.

If you have not activated Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console or do not use an account ID to access the service after you activate the service, you are not charged.

Billing strategy

  1. Public DNS Commercial Edition provides a free quota of 10 million HTTP-based resolutions per month. A resolution that uses DNS over TLS (DoT) or DNS over HTTPS (DoH) is counted as five HTTP-based resolutions.

  2. After you use up the free quota, you are charged CNY 0.04 per 10,000 resolutions.

  3. If your account has an overdue payment for Public DNS, you are given a 24-hour grace period. After your payment is overdue for 24 hours, the service is suspended. Alibaba Cloud shall not be held liable for the adverse impact of service suspension.

If you do not need to use advanced features of Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console, such as the report feature, you can use the service for free as a regular user. For more information, see Access the Alibaba Cloud Public DNS service as a regular user. If you are an enterprise user that requires high service stability and reliability, we recommend that you use Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console. Alibaba Cloud provides advanced features, higher service availability, and after-sales support for you.

Note: If the commercial release date or billing strategy is changed, this page is immediately updated to inform you of the change. Stay tuned.

FAQ

1. Q: I have not activated Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console, but I have set the IP address of my DNS server to 223.5.5.5 to use Public DNS. In this case, will Alibaba Cloud charge me?

A: No, you are not charged. If you have not activated Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console, you are not charged. You are charged only after you activate Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console and use an account ID to access the service.

2. Q: I have activated Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console and use an account ID to access the service during the public preview period. Are bills automatically generated after the public preview period ends?

A: After the public preview period ends, Alibaba Cloud sends you a notification about the commercial release. Within 15 days after you receive the notification, you must go to the Public DNS page of the Alibaba Cloud DNS console to reactivate this service. If you reactivate this service, it is deemed that you accept the billing strategy. You are charged after you use up the free monthly quota.

3. Q: What can I do if I want to use only the free DNS service provided by Public DNS and do not need those advanced features of Public DNS?

A: If you do not need to use advanced features of Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console, such as the report feature, you can use Public DNS Free Edition. For more information, see Access the Alibaba Cloud Public DNS service as a regular user.

4. Q: What is the difference between Public DNS Commercial Edition and Public DNS Free Edition?

A: Public DNS Commercial Edition: You need to use an account ID to access the DNS service provided by this edition. This edition provides higher service level agreement (SLA) compliance and the advanced features in the Alibaba Cloud Management console, such as the resolution report, operations logs, and continuous service iteration.

Public DNS Free Edition: This edition is available to all users for free. It provides only the basic DNS service. The advanced features of Public DNS, which are provided in the Alibaba Cloud Management console, are unavailable in this edition.

5. Q: No resolutions are performed after I activate Public DNS in the Alibaba Cloud Management console. In this case, will Alibaba Cloud charge me?

A:: After the public preview period, Public DNS is billed based on the number of HTTP-based resolutions that are associated with your account ID. You are charged only for resolutions that are associated with your account ID. Alibaba Cloud provides a free monthly quota of 10 million HTTP-based resolutions for you if you use Public DNS Commercial Edition. You are charged only for excess resolutions.

6. Q: How does Alibaba Cloud charge me if I have both HTTP-based resolutions and HTTPS-based resolutions?

A: Alibaba Cloud charges you based on the number of HTTP-based resolutions. A resolution that uses DoT or DoH is counted as five HTTP-based resolutions. Assume that you have generated a total of 10 million HTTP-based resolutions and 2 million HTTPS-based resolutions. You are charged based on the number that is calculated by using the following formula:

10,000,000 + 2,000,000 × 5 -10,000,000 (Free monthly quota) = 10,000,000. The bill is calculated by using the following formula:

10,000,000/10,000 × CNY 0.04 = CNY 40.
