Elastic Compute Service:Use a private pool to create instances

Last Updated:Aug 28, 2023

When you purchase a resource reservation, Alibaba Cloud reserves resources that have matching attributes as a private pool, which you can use to create Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances.

Prerequisites

  • The private pool that you want to use is in the Active state.
  • The private pool has available capacity. For information about how to view the resource usage of a private pool, see View a private pool.

Background information

This topic describes only private pool-related parameters involved in a procedure to create ECS instances. For information about other parameters involved in the procedure, see Create an instance by using the wizard.

Procedure

  1. In the ECS console, go to the Custom Launch tab of the instance buy page.
  2. Configure the parameters in the Basic Configurations step and click Next.
The following table describes the parameters in the Basic Configurations step.
    ParameterDescription
    Billing Method
    • To use the private pool that is associated with an elasticity assurance, an immediate capacity reservation, or a capacity reservation with Savings Plan, set Billing Method to Pay-as-you-go.
    • To use the private pool that is associated with a capacity reservation for subscription resources, set Billing Method to Subscription.
RegionSelect the same region and zone as the resource reservation.
Instance TypeSelect the same instance type as the resource reservation.
ImageTo use the private pool that is associated with an immediate capacity reservation, select a Linux or Windows image.
  3. Complete the settings in the Networking step and click Next.
  4. Complete the settings in the System Configurations (Optional) step and click Next.
  5. Configure the parameters in the Grouping (Optional) step and click Next.
In the Grouping (Optional) step, specify whether to use a private pool and how to use the private pool.
    • Specify the ID of a private pool: When you create instances, select Targeted from the Private Pool Type drop-down list and specify the ID of the private pool that you want to use. The ID of a private pool is the same as the ID of the associated resource reservation. If the specified private pool has no available capacity, instances cannot be created.
Note You can specify the ID of an open private pool or a targeted private pool to use the private pool.
    • Add tags to match an open private pool: If you add tags to a resource reservation at the time of purchase, the private pool that is associated with the resource reservation has the same tags added, and instances that have the same tags added can be matched with the private pool. When you create instances, select Open from the Private Pool Type drop-down list and add tags to the instances. Then, resources in the matching private pool can be used to create the instances. If the private pool has no available capacity, the system uses the public pool.
Note Only open private pools can be matched by tag.

When you specify the ID of an open private pool and add the tags of a different open private pool to instances, the open private pool whose ID is specified is used. For example, if you specify the ID of Open Private Pool A and add the tags of Open Private Pool B to instances, Open Private Pool A is used.

    • Use an open private pool that is assigned by the system. If you do not add tags to instances, the instances cannot be matched with an open private pool by tag. When you create instances, select Open from the Private Pool Type drop-down list. The system selects an open private pool that has no tag. If the specified private pool has no available capacity, the system uses the public pool.
Note The system selects only open private pools.
    • Specify not to use private pools: When you create instances, select None from the Private Pool Type drop-down list. The public pool is used.
  6. Check your configurations and read the terms of service. Confirm to create the instances and complete the payment.

What to do next

After you use a private pool to create instances, you can check whether and which instances are associated with the private pool on the Private Pools tab of the Resource Advisor page. For more information, see View a private pool.
