To back up files from Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances and restore these files, you must deploy a backup client on these ECS instances in the Hybrid Backup Recovery (HBR) console.

Background

You can install a backup client on a few ECS instances of a specified region or install a backup client on multiple or all ECS instances of a specified region at a time by using a template.

If the version of an ECS backup client is outdated, you can upgrade the client to the latest version. If an ECS backup client fails to be activated or upgraded, you must uninstall the client and then reinstall it. If you no longer need the backup data on an ECS backup client, you can delete the client.

Install a backup client on a few ECS instances

To install a backup client on a few ECS instances of a specified region, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to the HBR console.
  2. Select a region where ECS instances to be backed up reside.
  3. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > ECS File Backup.
  4. On the ECS Instance tab, click Add ECS Instance in the upper-right corner.
  5. In the Add ECS Instance pane that appears, set Vault Name. If you have created backup vaults, select a backup vault from the drop-down list. If you have not created any backup vaults, click Create Vault and enter a vault name in the Vault Name field to create a vault. The vault name can be a maximum of 64 characters in length.
Note A backup vault is a repository used by HBR to store backup data in the cloud. You can back up data from multiple backup clients to the same vault. Backup vaults reside in different regions. You can only select or create backup vaults in the current region.
  6. Select one or more ECS instances on which you need to install a backup client. In the drop-down list on the left of the search bar, select Instance ID, Instance Name, VPC ID, Private IP (VPC), or Internal IP (Classic). Then, enter an ID, name, or IP address or enter a keyword to search for the desired ECS instances.
Notice If you select Internal IP (Classic), you must enter the AccessKey information for the selected ECS instances. We recommend that you enter the AccessKey information of a Resource Access Management (RAM) user.
  7. Click Create. HBR automatically installs a backup client on the selected ECS instances.

Install a backup client on multiple or all ECS instances by using a template

To install a backup client on multiple or all ECS instances of a specified region at a time by using a template, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to the HBR console.
  2. Select a region where ECS instances to be backed up reside.
  3. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > ECS File Backup.
  4. On the ECS Instance tab, choose Batch Operation > Batch Add ECS Instances in the upper-right corner.
  5. In the Batch Add ECS Instance pane that appears, enter a vault name in the Vault Name field. The vault name can be a maximum of 64 characters in length.
  6. Optional. You can select Private IP (VPC) or Internal IP (Classic) to specify the private or internal IP addresses of ECS instances.
    Note
    • If no IP address is specified, the template lists all the ECS instances that are installed with a Cloud Assistant client but no backup client in the specified region.
    • After IP addresses are specified, the template lists only ECS instances corresponding to these IP addresses.
    • Separate multiple IP addresses with commas (,).
  7. Click Download Template.
  8. Open the downloaded template, set Access Key ID and Access Key Secret for ECS instances located on the classic network, and then save the template.
    Note
    • If you need to install a backup client on more than 20 ECS instances at a time, HBR automatically creates backup vaults to host more backup clients.
    • For more information about how to obtain the AccessKey ID and AccessKey secret of an account, see View the basic information about AccessKey pairs.
    • If you do not need to install a backup client on an ECS instance, delete all parameters of the instance from the template.
    • We recommend that you do not change the column headings in the template, such as Instance ID, Instance Name, and Network Type.
    • For account security, we recommend that you delete the local template after the template is uploaded.
  9. Click Upload Template.
After the template is uploaded, the number of each type of specified ECS instances and the total number of specified ECS instances appear.

Manage backup clients

On the ECS File Backup page, click the ECS Instance tab and find the target ECS instance. To search for an ECS instance, select Private IP (VPC) or Internal IP (Classic) from the drop-down list, enter a keyword in the search box, and then click the search icon.

You can view the installation status of the backup client, uninstall the backup client, delete the backup client, or upgrade the backup client for the target ECS instance.

Operation Description
View the installation status of a backup client After a backup client is installed, its status is Activated. If the status is Install Failed, follow the error message and choose More > Install Client in the Actions column.
Uninstall a backup client Find the target ECS instance and choose More > Uninstall Client in the Actions column.
Delete a backup client If you need to remove an ECS instance from the list and uninstall the backup client from the ECS instance, choose More > Delete in the Actions column.
Note After you delete a backup client, the existing backup data is also deleted, and relevant in-progress backup and restore jobs will fail. Before deleting the backup client, make sure that the backup data of this client is no longer needed and this client has no backup and restore jobs in progress.
Upgrade a backup client Find the target ECS instance and click Upgrade in the Client Type column to upgrade the backup client to the latest version.
