Cloud Backup:Upgrade, uninstall, or delete a Cloud Backup client for ECS

Last Updated:Sep 22, 2023

After an SAP HANA instance is registered, you can view the installation status of the Cloud Backup client for Elastic Compute Service (ECS) on each node of the SAP HANA instance. You must make sure that a Cloud Backup client is installed on each node that you want to back up. After the Cloud Backup client is installed, you can upgrade, reinstall, uninstall, or delete the Cloud Backup client based on your business requirements. You can upgrade multiple Cloud Backup clients at the same time.

Prerequisites

An SAP HANA instance is registered. For more information about the backup methods, see Register an SAP HANA instance.

Background information

  • If the version of a Cloud Backup client for ECS is outdated, you can upgrade the client to the latest version.

  • If a Cloud Backup client for ECS fails to be activated or upgraded, you must uninstall the client and install it again.

  • If you no longer need the backup data in a Cloud Backup client for ECS, you can delete the Cloud Backup client.

Manage a Cloud Backup client

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Back Up > SAP HANA Backup.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. Click the SAP HANA Instances tab.

  5. Find the SAP HANA instance that you want to manage, and choose More > View Details in the Actions column.

  6. On the SAP HANA Instance Details page, click the SAP HANA Nodes tab. On the tab that appears, view the installation status of the client for ECS on each node. If the node status is Activated, a Cloud Backup client is installed. You can perform the following operations on a Cloud Backup client:

    • Upgrade a Cloud Backup client

To upgrade a Cloud Backup client on a node, find the node and click Upgrade in the Client Type column.

Before you upgrade the client, you must disable the backup feature of SAP HANA. For more information, see SAP Note 2009486.

    • Reinstall a Cloud Backup client

To reinstall a client on a node, choose More > Uninstall Client in the Actions column of the node. After the client is uninstalled, choose More > Reinstall Client in the Actions column of the node.

    • Uninstall a Cloud Backup client

To uninstall a Cloud Backup client from a node, choose More > Uninstall Client in the Actions column of the node.

    • Delete a client

To delete a client from a node and delete the node from the instance, click Delete in the Actions column of the node.

      Important

After you delete a client from an SAP HANA node, the existing backup data is still retained.

To delete the SAP HANA instance after the Cloud Backup client is deleted, perform the following steps:

      1. On the SAP HANA Backup tab, click the SAP HANA Instances tab.

      2. Find the SAP HANA instance that you want to delete, choose More > Delete.

        Important

After you delete an SAP HANA instance, the existing backup data is also deleted and the running backup and restore jobs fail to be completed. Before you delete the SAP HANA instance, make sure that you no longer need the data in the Cloud Backup client of the instance and no backup or restore jobs are running for the instance. To delete an SAP HANA instance, you must enter the security identifier (SID) of the instance. The SID is three characters in length and starts with a letter. For more information, see How to find sid user and instance number of HANA db?

Upgrade multiple Cloud Backup clients at the same time

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Back Up > SAP HANA Backup.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. Click Update HANA Clients.

  5. In the Update HANA Clients panel, select the clients that you want to upgrade and click OK.

  6. In the dialog box that appears, confirm the latest version to which you want to upgrade your HANA clients and the client list. Click OK.

The Client Status changes to Upgrading. After the upgrade, the HANA clients are in the latest version and the Activated state.
