Synchronize the data dictionary for an instance

Last Updated: May 08, 2020

After you register a database as an instance in the Data Management Service (DMS) console, the system automatically synchronizes the data dictionary from the database. If you change schemas in a way rather than by using DMS, you need to manually initiate the dictionary synchronization task.

Prerequisites

You are a database administrator (DBA) or a DMS administrator.

Background

A data dictionary is used to classify and manage permissions on databases, tables, fields, and programmable objects. A synchronized data dictionary includes the following information:

  • The name and character set of the database.
  • The names, occupied storage, number of rows, character sets, fields, indexes, and descriptions of the tables.
  • The types, precision, and descriptions of the fields.

Rules on dictionary synchronization:

  • If you change schemas by using DMS, the system automatically synchronizes the data dictionary.
  • If you change schemas in a way rather than by using DMS, you need to manually initiate the dictionary synchronization task.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the DMS console.

  2. In the top navigation bar, choose System Management > Instance.

  3. Synchronize one or more data dictionaries at a time based on your business requirements.

    • Synchronize the data dictionary for a single instance

      1. On the Instance List tab, find the target instance for which you want to synchronize the data dictionary.

You can also find the target instance in the left-side navigation pane, right-click the instance, and then select Sync dictionary to synchronize the data dictionary.

      2. Move the pointer over More in the Actions column and select Sync dictionary.

      3. In the dialog box that appears, click OK.

    • Synchronize the data dictionaries for multiple instances at a time

      1. On the Instance List tab, select the target instances for which you want to synchronize the data dictionaries.

      2. Click Sync dictionary in the upper part of the tab.

      3. In the dialog box that appears, click OK.
