:Register a gateway

Last Updated:Feb 01, 2024

You can use Cloud Backup to back up shares of Cloud Storage Gateway (CSG). Then, you can restore the shares as needed. Before you back up shares of CSG, you must register a gateway.

Limits

You cannot back up gateways of the Basic type.

Procedure

Note

You can log on to the Cloud Backup console to view the regions in which the CSG backup service is supported.

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Back Up > CSG Backup.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. On the Storage Gateways tab, click Register Storage Gateway.

  5. In the Register Storage Gateway panel, configure the parameters and then click Create. The following table describes the parameters.

    Parameter

    Description

    Backup Vault

The backup vault to which you want to store the backup data. Valid values:

    • Create Vault: If you select this option, specify a name for the backup vault in the Vault Name field. If you do not configure this parameter, a random name is specified.

    • Select Vault: If you select this option, select a backup vault from the Vault Name drop-down list.

    Important

After a backup vault is created, you are charged for the backup vault regardless of whether backup data is generated. For more information, see Billing methods and billable items.

To maximize the redundancy of your backup data, Cloud Backup uses ZRS-enabled backup vaults by default in regions that support ZRS-enabled backup vaults. If only LRS-enabled backup vaults are available in the region where the backup vaults are located, Cloud Backup uses LRS-enabled backup vaults. You do not need to manually select a backup vault type.

    Vault Name

The name of the backup vault.

    Vault Resource Group

This parameter is required only if you set the Backup Vault parameter to Create Vault. This parameter specifies the resource group to which the backup vault belongs.

You can use resource groups to manage resources owned by your Alibaba Cloud account. Resource groups help you simplify the resource and permission management of your Alibaba Cloud account. For more information, see Create a resource group.

    Gateway Cluster

The cluster where the gateway resides.

    Use HTTPS

Specifies whether to use HTTPS to transmit encrypted data that is stored in a backup vault. To ensure data security during transmission, we recommend that you transmit data over HTTPS. If you modify the setting of this parameter, the modification takes effect on the next backup or restore job.

    • No: HTTPS is not used to transmit data.

    • Yes: HTTPS is used to transmit data.

Select a gateway that you want to back up.

In the list of gateways, select the gateway that you want to back up.

    Note

You can use Cloud Backup to back up only standard and enhanced file gateways.

After you register the gateway, Cloud Backup installs a backup client for ECS on the node of the gateway. On the Storage Gateways tab, you can view the installation status of the backup client for ECS on the node of the gateway. You can also upgrade a Cloud Backup client based on your business requirements.

Related operations

On the Storage Gateways tab, you can also perform the following operations on a gateway.

Operation

Description

Check the installation status of the backup client

If the backup client is installed, the client status is Activated.

If the client status is Failed, the installation of a backup client fails. Follow the instructions in the error message to troubleshoot the error. After the error is fixed, choose More > Install Client in the Actions column.

Uninstall the backup client

Choose More > Uninstall Client in the Actions column.

Delete the backup client

To uninstall the backup client and delete the gateway, choose More > Delete in the Actions column.

Note

Before you delete a backup client, make sure that the client has no backup jobs that are running or completed.

Configure the backup client

Specify the maximum number of worker threads, the maximum number of CPU cores, and whether to use HTTPS to transmit data.

  • Use HTTPS: Specify the protocol over which the client transmits data. Your backup data is encrypted and stored in the backup vault. You can specify whether to use HTTPS to transmit encrypted data that is stored in a backup vault. If you use HTTPS, the performance of data transmission may be degraded. If you modify the setting of this parameter, the modification takes effect on the next backup or restore job.

Note: The client version must be 1.11.12 or later.

  • Maximum number of worker threads: Specify the number of threads that work on the client.

  • Maximum CPU Cores: Specify the maximum number of CPU cores that are used by the client.

View backup records

View the files that are backed up.

Configure alerts

You can choose More > Alert Settings in the Action columns and then select a backup alert policy.

Specify the method that is used to send alert notifications if the Cloud Backup client, a backup job, or a restore job is abnormal.

  • Disabled: The backup client does not send alert notifications.

  • Same as Backup Vault: The backup client sends alert notifications by using the same method configured for the backup vault.

  • Notify Alibaba Cloud Account: The backup client sends alert notifications to the owner of the Alibaba Cloud account by using emails.

  • Custom: If you select this option, you must select one or more alert contacts or contact groups. If an alert is triggered, the backup client sends alert notifications to the selected alert contacts or contact groups. For more information, see Manage alert contacts.
