Add cache disks

Last Updated: Jun 28, 2019

Add cache disks

To use volumes that have the Cache mode enabled, add a cache disk to the gateway first. The following topics describe how to add cache disks to gateways deployed on Alibaba Cloud and on-premises.

You can select Cache Mode when you create a volume. In Cache Mode, you can select a cache disk for each volume. When Cache Mode is enabled, the cache disk is first used to read and write data. The OSS bucket is used only when a cache read or write miss occurs.

Add cache disks to gateways deployed on Alibaba Cloud

1、1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud CSG console, click the target gateway, and then click Cache in the left-side navigation pane, as shown in the following figure:

1

2、Click Create in the upper-right corner, as shown in the following figure:

Note: The minimum cache capacity is 20 GB and the maximum is 8 TB.

35

3、Click OK to go to the checkout page. Confirm the order and settle the payment.

4、The cache disks that you have added are listed on the Cache page, as shown in the following figure:

36

Expand the cache disks of gateways deployed on Alibaba Cloud

1、You can expand a cache disk by clicking the plus sign (+) in the Actions column.

37

Note: When you expand a cache disk, the gateway automatically restarts. You cannot perform any operations on the gateway during this process.

Click OK to go to the checkout page. Confirm the order and settle the payment.

2、You can view the resized cache disk on the Cache page after a few minutes.

Add cache disks to on-premises gateways

You can select Cache Mode when you create a volume. In Cache Mode, you can select a cache disk for each volume. When Cache Mode is enabled, the cache disk is first used to read and write data. The OSS bucket is used only when a cache read or write miss occurs.

After the gateway is deployed, you must add a disk to the host that runs the platform where the gateway is deployed, for example, VMware vSphere and Hyper-V. After the disk is added, log on to the gateway and refresh the Caches page. You can then add a cache disk to the gateway. We recommend that you choose a thick LUN to provision cache disks for higher I/O throughput. The capacity of each cache disk must be 20 GB or larger.

Add disks to Hyper-V

1、If the gateway is deployed on Hyper-V, you must add disks to the host that runs Hyper-V, as shown in the following figures:

The host must be restarted if you add disks by using an IDE controller. However, you do not need to restart the host if you add disks by using an SCSI controller. We recommend that you use an SCSI controller to add disks.

Select Virtual hard disk and specify the disk capacity. This example adds a virtual hard disk with a capacity of 100 GB. We recommend that you use disks with a minimum capacity of 20 GB for higher I/O throughput. For more information about the cache configuration, see Question 4 in the FAQ chapter.

After the configuration is completed, click Apply and OK. In this example, one disk is added. You can add multiple disks based on your actual needs.

Add disks to VMware vSphere

1、If the gateway is deployed on VMware vSphere, you must add disks to the host that runs VMware vSphere, as shown in the following figures:

Select the target gateway, click the Configuration tab, and click Edit Settings.

141

In the dialog box that appears, click Select and choose a hard disk.

142

Click Add and specify the disk capacity. We recommend that you choose a disk with a minimum capacity of 20 GB. Click OK to add the disk.

In this example, only one hard disk is added, you can add multiple disks based on your actual needs.
