You can use Hybrid Backup Recovery (HBR) to back up SAP HANA databases deployed on Alibaba Cloud Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances and restore these databases as required. This topic describes how to back up an SAP HANA database.

Prerequisites

Preparations are completed.

Create a backup plan

To create a backup plan, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to the HBR console.
  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > ECS Application Backup. On the ECS Application Backup page, select SAP HANA.
  3. On the page that appears, click the SAP HANA Instance tab.
  4. On the SAP HANA Instance tab, find the target SAP HANA instance and click Backup in the Actions column.
  5. In the Create Plan pane that appears, select the database to be backed up and click Next.
    Note You cannot back up databases that are stopped.
  6. In the Config Plan step, set the parameters as described in the following table.
    Parameter Required Description
    Backup Policy Yes
    • If you need to back up the database now, select Instant Backup.
    • If you need to regularly back up the database, select Schedule Backup.
    Backup Type Yes
    • Complete: backs up full data in the database.
    • Incremental: backs up data added or modified after the last full backup or incremental backup.
    • Differential: backs up data modified after the last full backup.
    Backup Prefix No The prefix of a backup version. If you do not specify this parameter, the default prefix is used.
    Plan Name No The name of the backup plan. This parameter is required for scheduled backups.
    Start Time No The start time of the backup plan. The time is accurate to seconds. This parameter is required for scheduled backups.
    Plan Run Interval No The interval for backing up data. Valid units: hours, days, and weeks. This parameter is required for scheduled backups.
  7. Click OK.

(Optional) Configure the retention policy of backup data

By default, HBR keeps the backup data of SAP HANA databases for 10 years. To configure the retention policy of backup data, follow these steps:

  1. On the ECS Application Backup page, click the SAP HANA Instance tab.
  2. Find the target SAP HANA instance and click the instance name or choose More > Manage Node in the Actions column.
  3. On the page that appears, click the Database tab. Find the target database and choose More > Config Retention in the Actions column.
  4. In the Config Retention pane that appears, set the parameters as described in the following table.

    Retention Policy
    • Keep Forever

      Select this option if you want to keep backup data for 10 years. HBR automatically deletes the backup data when the retention period expires.

    • Customized

      Select this option if you want to customize the time for deleting expired backup data each day and the retention period of backup data.

    Time to Run Retention The time for deleting expired backup data. The time is accurate to seconds.
    Note We recommend that you specify a time other than business and backup peak hours.
    Retention The retention period of backup data.

    Valid units: days, weeks, months, and years. Minimum retention period: 1 day. Maximum retention period: 10 years.

    Note After the retention period expires, HBR automatically deletes the expired catalogs and data related to Backint backup and file backup. The deleted catalogs and data cannot be recovered. Specify the retention period with caution.
  5. Click Create.
    Note To change the retention period of backup data, repeat the preceding steps and specify another retention period.

What to do next

After a backup plan is created, you can view the backup records of the backup plan or cancel backup jobs.

  • Manage a backup plan

    In the HBR console, you can view the information and status of created backup plans, and manage these backup plans. To manage a backup plan, follow these steps:

    1. Log on to the HBR console.
    2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > ECS Application Backup. On the ECS Application Backup page, select SAP HANA.
    3. On the page that appears, click the Backup Plan tab.
    4. On the Backup Plan tab, find the target backup plan and check its information and status.
    5. Click a button in the Actions column as needed to manage the backup plan. In the Actions column, you can click Edit, Execute, Disable Plan, Enable Plan, or Delete Plan. After you delete a backup plan, HBR no longer runs the plan but retains data that is backed up by using the plan.
  • View or cancel a backup job

    You can view the status of instant backup jobs and scheduled backup jobs. You can also cancel ongoing backup jobs. To view or cancel a backup job, follow these steps:

    1. Log on to the HBR console.
    2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > ECS Application Backup. On the ECS Application Backup page, select SAP HANA.
    3. On the page that appears, click the Backup Jobs tab.
    4. On the Backup Jobs tab, find the target backup job and check its information and status.
    5. To cancel an ongoing backup job, click Cancel in the Actions column for the backup job.
  • View backup records

    You can view all backup records in the HBR console. To view backup records, follow these steps:

    1. Log on to the HBR console.
    2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > ECS Application Backup. On the ECS Application Backup page, select SAP HANA.
    3. On the page that appears, click the SAP HANA Instance tab.
    4. On the SAP HANA Instance tab, find the target SAP HANA instance and choose More > Manage Node in the Actions column.
    5. On the HANA Instance Info page that appears, click the Backup History tab.
    6. Find the target backup job and view its details.
